What is Vellum Paper
Vellum paper gives a touch of elegance to any artwork. Nowadays, it is commonly used to add drama to a scrapbook or a photo album for special occasions such as weddings and anniversaries. For people or companies celebrating a special event, they use vellum on their invitations to give it extra class and style. Some use it to make greeting cards look catchier. It sure beats those that you can find in bookstore racks.
Vellum has always been recognized as a specialty paper both then and now. It is made of animal skin which makes is sturdy and long lasting. With proper care and handling, this paper can last for over a century. No wonder it is the choice of authors and artists who want their work immortalized. What better way to showcase your masterpieces to the generations to come than by placing it in a sturdy material that would surely remain unchanged long after the artist is gone. Of course, it doesn't hurt that vellum paper is stylishly elegant in its simplicity with faint grain and hair markings.
During the middle ages, writers of the finer manuscripts wrote on Vellum in Europe and beyond as some Gandharan Buddhist texts were also discovered to be written on Vellum. The first Johannes Gutenberg Bible during 1455 was printed on Vellum. Take note that this Bible was for the high-end market. Painters also made the same choice of material for their artwork up until the 17th century. It was also used for important documents such as diplomas and for a very good reason too. A document dated over a thousand years ago was discovered in Ireland and was written on Vellum. It's called Faddan More Psalter and whoever made a choice to use this material did a very impressive job. Vellum, without a doubt, had many uses then as it has plenty up to the present.
Nowadays, vellum paper is usually used on photo albums, scrapbooks, greeting cards and invitations. As it was in the past, it is still considered a specialty paper and is definitely not for the cheap. Because it is delicate and not as porous as other papers, however, there are certain ways to handle it. Once you have mastered the art of using vellum, you'll discover that it's pretty simple and fun too!
Keep in mind that because vellum is very delicate, it must be handled with care. Avoid smudging the ink or folding it unnecessarily at all cost. Creases and smudges are extremely difficult, if not impossible to hide. When choosing the paper for underneath the vellum, try to choose bright ones and not the pale or dark ones. Why? Because it will look so much better once you overlay the vellum on it. It won't look too boring as would be the case if you use pale papers and it won't be too shockingly striking either.
Do take note that printing on vellum can be pretty trick. To avoid ink from smudging, let it dry first before touching the area.
Vellum has the quality of a special paper that can be traced from the ancient times to modern days. Use it and discover that imagination is the key to maximize the use of vellum.
