What are Brogues shoes?
Trends in footwear are ever changing and the latest craze in this category is that of brogues shoes. These have gained popularity in recent times, especially in the men's range. Originally from Scotland and Ireland where they were also used as a special dancing shoe, the traditional design has been altered to today's tastes.
In the early days, these shoes were considered functional shoes and were made from heavy perforated leather that could be drained with ease. The perforation was created due the lifestyle of the Scottish and Irish people, who worked outdoors in a damp environment. However, over time, they have evolved into dress brogues with a low heel and sleeker looks.
Brogues shoes for men are no longer used for roughing it out and are very much a formal shoe. Unlike the traditional design, the leather used now is tanned, and though the perforations are still there, they are created in a W-shape, known as the wingtip. It is this feature that makes them distinct from other formal shoes, and these are also referred to as wingtips in the US.
Other changes have also been made to the design of these shoes. Dress brogues, for instance, come with a tongue under the laces, as opposed to traditional ghillies that did not have a tongue as it would have retained water. These come with a low heel and a soft sole, for more comfort. Also the laces used to be tied up till the ankle, while that is no longer in practice. Ghillies are still in vogue in Scotland, though, where they are worn with formal Scottish kilts.
Brogues shoes, also called Oxford shoes, usually retain the original brown color of leather, but can also be bought in black for a more formal occasion. The term ‘brogue' signifies the lacing of the shoe, and you will find half and full brogues meaning shoes with closed or open lacing. Also, full brogues shoes have a toe cap in a W shape, with punched patterns all over, including the heel counter. Half brogues shoes for men, on the other hand, have a straight-edged toe cap with less perforations.
