We have all been invited to our friends baby showers, or soon will be, and have faced the perplexing issue of what to buy. This decision only gets harder when the parents choose to be surprised about the child's gender versus finding out early. Although this is an extremely exciting time and there are many arrangements designed for both boys and girls, the choice are limited when you don't know what colors to aim for. This article was written to help those cross-gender gift hunters find the perfect present that is not only different from the conventional shelf product, but also meaningful. It will also cover the gifts that should be avoided and will hopefully spark an idea for a gift that will be cherished.
Step 1: Avoid purchasing clothes. There are a lot of adorable outfits out there in green and yellow. However, when the baby has arrived and the parents know the sex, they will inevitably pass over the green and yellow outfits in the baby's closet for more gender specific choices. In fact, sometimes it's so hard to distinguish a baby boy's face from a baby girl's face that parents specifically avoid neutral clothes in an effort to avoid the question from strangers.
Step 2: Can't go wrong with the essentials. Diapers and wipes are two products you can never go wrong with. Babies will use these items regardless of their sex and they will use a lot of them! The parents will appreciate the fact that you thought about practicality.
Step 3: All babies need baths! Anything associated with tub time would make an appropriate gift for a baby whose sex you don't yet know. The parents will need a small tub to bathe the baby in, as well as washcloths, shampoo, lotion, and towels. Tub toys are also a great gift to receive as babies are entertained by them very early on.
Step 4: Lullabies are not gender specific. Find some soft soothing music for the unborn child. There are classic lullaby CDs, lullaby CDs by modern artists and lullaby CDs that are specific to the baby's heritage, such as a Celtic Lullaby CD. You can search for lullaby CDs online, at bookstores or at baby retail stores.
Step 5: Books and toys are always appropriate. Babies like to be read to as soon as they enter the world. Purchase any type of book for the new family (soft books, board books, classics, etc.) and know that they will be read regularly. Newborn toys such as rattles and soft blocks come in bright colors and are not typically gender specific.
Step 6: Check out the registry! If the parents have visited a store such as Babies R Us, Target or Wal Mart and created a gift registry, check out those items. You can be sure that if the parents registered for the item, it's something they want or need. You don't have to worry about offending them because they've chosen all the products on their registry!
Many people feel overwhelmed when faced with the decision of finding a gift that a boy can have fun with or a girl can love. By using the tips above to help guide your decision, your gift will be a hit no matter what. One thing to keep in mind is that the gift doesn't always have to be only for the child. They new parents will always appreciate a gift that was picked just for them. Often times gift certificates are graciously accepted and allow the parent to choose what they really want versus what others think the need.
