Top 5 Principles for Helping your Child Build a Good Character
Children need their parents’ input to develop into responsible adults and this input must come at a time he/she is most receptive to corrections. This period corresponds with the formative years of the child.
Oscar Wilde, the Irish poet and dramatist has this to say of youth;
“Youth! There is nothing like youth.
The middle-aged are mortgaged to life.
The old are life’s lumber room.
But youth is the Lord of life.
Youth has a kingdom waiting for it.
Everyone is born a king, and most people die in exile”.
Without character, a young person stands a narrow chance of being a success in the corporate world and may never be upwardly mobile. The following are 5 time-proven principles for helping your child build sound character:
- Be an example to your child
The bible says ‘train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it’ [Proverbs 22:6]. Abraham Lincoln said, ‘the only way a Father can train a child in the way he should go is for him to walk the way’. Children learn more by observing what their parents do than from what they are taught. Be sure you are an example in truthfulness, honesty and fair play in all your dealings; then it becomes easy for your child to understand the importance of these values in real life.
2. Instruct your child on character building values
Let a portion of your family devotion be dedicated to moral instruction. A chapter a day from the book of Proverbs in the Bible will give enough food for thought on values that build character. The whole book of proverbs will take the family 31 days if you read a chapter a day after which another book of the bible that dwells on character building values can be read. Books other than the bible that offer moral lessons can also be read from time to time. According to C.S. Lewis; “Human beings must be trained in obedience to moral intuitions almost before they are rational enough to discuss them, or they will be corrupted before the time for discussion arrives”. Teach your child and also take time to explain to the morality of certain actions.
3. Apply Disciplinary Measures When Necessary
The book of proverbs says; “Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of correction will save the child”. There should be different disciplinary measures that match the offence; measures could range from denial of privileges to corporal punishment. Restitution by doing some odd jobs in the home for specific offenses also drives home the message that the consequences of wrong doing goes beyond the offender to affecting the larger community. The cane still has a place in shaping the character of some children, but must be used only when other measures had failed.
4. Allow your Child Face the Consequences of Wrong Choices
If your child shoplifts and you discover it at home, explain to him/her why that act is reprehensible. Make him/her take the stolen item back to the shopkeeper as soon as is possible with apologies to the shopkeeper. The gut-wrenching fear, shame and guilt with the uncertainty of the outcome of returning a stolen item are enough to serve as deterrent for a child. Making a child apologize to those he has wronged makes him more careful in his utterances and actions. Long term consequences of certain actions may not be lost on children. A child caught cheating during an examination might be labeled a cheat. Much later in life, if he seeks a political or public office, his school mates who were aware of his misdemeanor can embarrass him with that record.
5. Know Your Child’s Friends
The trite saying of “Show me your friends and I will tell you who you are” comes handy in describing a child’s character and tendencies. Teach your child how to know good boys and how to be friendly with such persons. Teach him to shun the company of boys who always get into trouble at school. Ask him to invite his friends home so you can interact with them and know about their background. Because bad company corrupts good morals, it is never too early to alert your child about the dangers of peer influence and the need to mind the company he keeps.
