Much of traditional Irish clothing was constructed from wool or linen. The upper classes were also able to afford silk items. Commonly worn pieces were arans, cardigans, scarves, and gloves. These were reflective of colder coastal weather experienced in Ireland. The Irish people took great care to create clothing which was uniquely their own, and seemed to have characteristics of the people themselves, such as hardiness and complexity.
Sweaters were an important item, particularly for fisherman. The aran, which is known as the 'fisherman's sweater' was originally designed off the west coast of Ireland, on the Aran Islands. It is a pullover type of sweater, made of wool, and specially created for the wet and cold lifestyle of the fishermen. Typically a fisherman's wife would knit the aran, from unscoured sheep's wool. The sheep in Ireland were slightly darker, resulting in a dark cream colored sweater. By leaving the wool unscoured, it retained natural oils which helped it retain waterproof qualities, which was great for life on a boat. The aran could absorb 30 percent of its weight in water, and still keep the wearer warm and dry.
Other sweater styles were the cardigan, with buttons and open at the front. Again, wool was the main material for these sweaters. The Irish people were known for their unique stitching patterns, which were different from clan to clan. The patterns had meanings, of which records were kept, and were handed down from generation to generation. The symbolism often had specific clan and/or religious significance. A fisherman who had met an unfortunate end at sea could typically be identified by his sweater patterns, if he was found by those who did not know him.
Scarves which were meant for protection from the cold were made from wool also. When scarves and other clothing were meant for adornment purposes, they could be made from linen, with detail oriented stitching. Gloves also were an important protection from the elements. Tweed hats made from wool are still popular, and if made with old-fashioned methods are dipped in blackberries, lichens, and gorse to achieve the popular Irish colors.
Irish clothing was known to be colorful, exhibiting hues such as yellow, orange, red, and green. Celtic knot work was incorporated into patterns. Pleats were commonly seen. Tunics and cloaks were important outer garb. Traditional Irish clothing is still widely available, although many modern Irish people wear western clothing.
