A walk on is the term used in college sports to describe a player who enrolls in college and joins a team despite not having a scholarship offer to play for the organization. This famously happened to the 5'6" Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger who despite all the odds successfully made it onto the field for the University of Notre Dame (ND) Fighting Irish for one game against Georgia Tech in the 1976 season finale.

Rudy played two downs (or plays) at the end of that game (which encompassed his entire official career). The first play involved being unable to get from his defensive line position to a running back carrying the ball. On the second play Rudy famously sacked quarterback Rudy Allen and in doing so cemented his place as only the second Notre Dame (ND) football player to ever be carried off the field by his teammates.

In some instances walk on players have been recruiting by coaches on the team but were considered so borderline in terms of talent and abilities that the program was unable to offer them one of a limited number of scholarships. In the scenario just described a player that has had contact with the coaching staff and has the outside potential to someday make it onto the playing field is referred to as a preferred walk on.

On the other hand there are individuals like Rudy with less recognized abilities that are simply students at a university who decide to take a shot at making the team as a walk on despite no agreement between the coaching staff and the individual as to whether or not the walk on has any chance whatsoever of making the cut or ever playing in a game. The 1993 movie Rudy (based on the life of Daniel Rudy Ruettiger) is a famous example of a young man who successfully walked onto the University of Notre Dame football team despite being undersized and having the odds stacked against him.

The endearing love affair that many people have with the concept of a walk on athlete is due in part because it is often recognized as the physical embodiment of overcoming obstacles. The notion that through hard work, discipline, and great sacrifice goals can be achieved despite long odds is a favorable story that anyone who has ever faced an obstacle before can enjoy hearing.

Since the 1993 release of the movie Rudy Mr. Ruettiger became a bit of a celebrity and channeled his unanticipated fame into positive avenues including motivational public speaking and the founding of the charitable Rudy Foundation with his wife Cheryl back in 1997.

Jeff, the author of this article, believes that Rudy probably relaxes occasionally on golf courses with a University Notre Dame golf bag. Jeff thinks that it would be quite an honor to run into Daniel Ruettiger on a golf course sometime when he has his ND golf bag with him.
