The Irish O'higgins - Ambrose and Barnardo in Argentina
Ambrose O’Higgins was born in Ballynary, Co. Sligo in 1720. The O’Higgins family had possessed large swathes of land but lost them all in the wake of the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland. In 1751, Ambrose left Ireland for Spain where he intended to study for the priesthood, however finding it not to his liking he sailed across the Atlantic to Argentina. He enrolled in the Spanish Imperial Service and was employed as a draughtsman and later as an engineer. John Garland, who was another Irish engineer in the Spanish Imperial Service, persuaded O’Higgins to move to the less established colony of Chile. He offered his services to the Spanish government in Chile, he was appointed Captain of Dragoons and sent on a punishing expedition against the Araucanian Indians. He far exceeded expectations and began to ascend the ranks of power remarkably rapidly, eventually becoming Governor of Chile. In 1796 he was appointed Viceroy of Peru, comprising present day Peru, Chile, Bolivia and northwest Argentina and parts of western Brazil.
In 1778, he had fathered a child, Bernardo O’Higgins Riquelme, by a young woman named Isabel Riquelme, a criolla of a prominent family of the ruling class. O’Higgins never saw his son, his only contribution was of a financial nature, paying for the boy to be educated in England. In London, the young Bernardo became interested in revolutionary politics and nationalism. Ambrose O’Higgins died in 1801, bequeathing a large tract of land in Chile to his son, Bernardo returned to control his estate becoming elected to the local town council. In 1810, he joined the nationalist rebels fighting for independence from Spain. In 1814, he was forced to retreat into Argentina, where he allied with the Argentinean General Jose de San Martin. Together they invaded Chile in 1817 securing independence at the Battle of Chacabuco with O’Higgins becoming leader of Chile. He ruled Chile until 1823 when he was deposed in a coup.

The Rebels of Ireland $29.52 The second and final part of the Dublin Saga picks up where the previous novel, THE PRINCES OF IRELAND, left off, in the mid-16th century, as the English consolidate their rule of Ireland, attempting to impose their beliefs (and in particular, their religion) upon their people. Rutherfurd uses a variety of perspectives to narrate the resulting conflict, frequently and tragically bloody, which continues for 400 years as the Irish struggle to win free of their conquerors. |
