Irish Pub Songs Sheet Music

1. If you are new to a session then watch and listen to get a feel for how the session is run. All sessions are different and will have a certain way of operating and different levels of competency, some are serious while others are more relaxed. Don't just barge in and start imposing your own ideas on an existing session or you may find you get a negative reaction from existing members of the group.

2. What is the skill level and are you competent at that level? You can roughly divide folk sessions into the following types:

Advanced: The session goes at a very fast pace, with the sets of tunes known and played by all those there. There is an inner circle of experienced musicians who prefer the company of others of the same skill level.

Intermediate: There's a lot more stopping and starting, and the skill levels of the musicians may vary from very competent to less competent. These can be less serious and more welcoming.

Beginners: Players are still just building up their skills and repertoire. You may not be allowed to use books or sheet music. This type of session can be led by one more experienced player who calls the tunes and sets the pace. Its better to have a competent player to set a good standard so that everybody can aim for this level of competence

You may be at a session that is above your level, if so then try to find a session that is more suitable. Try asking the participants if they know of local sessions that operate at your level and they will often be able to help you.

3. If you are new to the session, let others start the tunes. If you become a regular, nobody will find it odd if you start a set of tunes, but if you are new then you really should wait to be invited to start a tune. In intermediate sessions, you may find it easier to just jump in with a tune, once you know the etiquette, but wait until there is a break in the music. Be aware of the response from others; if they appear disinterested, then they probably are.

4. Try to have a series or set of tunes In most sessions musicians prefer to play a set of tunes, usually 3 tunes. If you are playing what may not be known, then try to include a well known tune or two in the set so that others can join in, rather than having to sit waiting. In Irish sessions, the convention is usually to play a tune three times. This gives anyone trying to learn the tune or more chance to pick it up. Its different in Scotland, where tunes are generally only played through twice.

5. Never speed up or slow down a tune The person who starts the tune will normally set the pace or tempo of the tune. You should follow this even if they are playing the tune slower than you would like. If people start competing or trying to speed up the tune, it can be very annoying for other players. don't play at a speed above your skill level as its better to play well at a slower pace than try something beyond your ability

6. don't start playing when others are tuning up You should wait until everyone is ready before starting the session. Usually there's a chat at the start of the session while everyone settles in, tunes up and waits for the inevitable latecomers to arrive and then tune up.

7. don't talk too loudly while others are playing If there's too much talk then it can be distracting for players and it can also show disrespect for their playing.

8. don't shout out a tune to play - ask others if they know a particular tune Rather than jumping in with a tune, ask others if they know a tune. You will know by their reaction whether they know it and more importantly whether they LIKE it. There is certain tunes that players may take a dislike to. For instance, some sessions don't like playing hornpipes. To retain your standing in a session, you can work out the likes and dislikes of others by making suggestions rather than making demands.

9. don't be afraid to ask questions or ask what others are learning One of the great aspects of sessions is that you are learning all the time. Its very helpful to learn what other resources people are using for learning tunes. Ask and you can find out what sets of tunes people are learning. Then you can play the tunes that are being played by other members. This will help you feel a part of the group and also improve your playing.

10. Take the time to work out the subtle rules of the session It takes time to get to know the likes and dislikes of a group, who the leaders of the group are and what sub-groups make up the larger session group. The best way to do this is to get a feel for the session, as in the first tip. By taking the time to learn these you have a better chance of not annoying people and not being embarrassed by reprimands when you do something that's out of step with the session.
