Britain's leading co-ed boarding school is in Rugby, a town at Warwickshire. Legend has it that when William Webb Ellis was playing in the school foot-ball team in 1823, he began to run towards the opposition goal clutching the ball instead of kicking it or dribbling it with his feet. Ellis is credited with having invented a new game. In 1845, the pupils of the school had written the first set of rules. The game began to be called "Rugby" after the name of the school where it was first played. Despite the lack of clear evidence supporting this legend, it has been immortalized in 1895 at the school with a plaque in memory of this event. This plaque (AD 1823) commemorates the exploit of Ellis who disregarded the rules of football and ran with the ball to the goal clutching it instead of kicking it. It is played on a rugby field or pitch (as it is sometimes called), measuring about 100 metres long and 70 metres wide with goal posts on goal lines. These two goal posts are shaped like a huge H with the top half of the vertical lines elongated high above. The two main differences between football and rugby are

1. It is played with a ball that is not round, like a foot ball, but a prolate spheroid. That means it is elliptical in shape.

2. The players are allowed to hold the ball in their hands and run towards the goal.
