Check Out The History And Tradition Irish Linen

It can be pretty sure that everyone has heard about linen. Its a strong fabric that still wraps round the pharaohs of Egypt. If you are getting your china out for a social gathering then you will get your linen tablecloth out too. From time to time a vehicle will drive through advertising the linen organization that sent it on its way. Nevertheless, the astounding Irish linen that's in homes and fine stores is the most popular.

Irish Linen hold a wonderful heritage behind them. Flax is made in Ireland for several centuries. Yarn was spun from the flax fiber, and from that, the tough, soft cloth was made. About 50 to 60 years ago, it was learned that the local weather was really much better in Northern France, Belgium, and the Netherlands for growing flax. Since that time, either the flax has been imported from those three countries, or spinners buy it to produce the yarn.

The yarn will be offered to weavers or knitters, who create the fabric. Can this alter its quality? Not in the least. The Irish Linen Guild said the yarns and flax fiber do not have to be produced in Ireland. The Irish tradition for spinning the yarn is the technology and craftsmanship that must be kept in Ireland. Along the same lines, the weaving skills and design have to take place in Ireland to show the Guild logo.

The more costly items are the original Irish made damask and jacquard weaving. The Irish Linen Guild logo is not given to any fabric that is woven outside Ireland and imported to be bleached or dyed. Fabric must have been woven or knitted in Ireland to earn the Guild logo.

The lint free cloth of Damask feels cool to the touch. The damask fabric has the feel and special touch inside the wool to give the durability of wear and tear in Irish Sweaters. To make it just right takes talent and time.

Remembering that the romantic hero in novels always had a clean white linen handkerchief either to present to the fair young maiden or lay down so her dainty slippers did not get soiled, it is easy to see why Irish linen had to be strong. Much scrubbing was done to remove the stains.

There is certainly worry about the incredible tourists who visit Ireland to make sure they're buying authentic Irish sweaters, linen, along with other quality products from the Land of the Shamrock. Many of the farmers and anglers have given up that type of work to earn the income visitors are happy to offer to be taken from one shop or market place to another.

Other businesses also have benefited. To give a better idea of the skills and methods to produce the fabric and also the finished item, tours have been made for the tourists. Even though a few stages of the process are carried out abroad, the basis of Irish linen continue being Irish. This tradition continues and is secure for future years.

1500 California Place Names

1500 California Place Names

$17.95

This is the new "pocket" version of the classic California Place Names , first published by California in 1949. Erwin G. Gudde's monumental work, which went through several editions during its author's lifetime, has now been released in an expanded and updated edition by William Bright. The abridged version, originally called 1000 California Place Names , has grown to a dynamic 1500 California Place Names in Bright's hands. Those who have used and enjoyed 1000 California Place Names through the decades will be glad to know that 1500 California Place Names is not only bigger but better. This handbook focuses on two sorts of names: those that are well-known as destinations or geographical features of the state, such as La Jolla, Tahoe, and Alcatraz, and those that demand attention because of their problematic origins, whether Spanish like Bodega and Chamisal or Native American like Aguanga and Siskiyou. Names of the major Indian tribes of California are included, since some of them have been directly adapted as place names and others have been the source of a variety of names. Bright incorporates his own recent research and that of other linguists and local historians, giving us a much deeper appreciation of the tangled ancestry many California names embody. Featuring phonetic pronunciations for all the Golden State's tongue-twisting names, this is in effect a brand new book, indispensable to California residents and visitors alike.

Arizona Place Names

Arizona Place Names

$48.71

Will Croft Barnes (1858-1937) first came to Arizona as a cavalryman and went on to become a rancher, state legislator, and conservationist. From 1905 to 1935, his travels throughout the state, largely on horseback, enabled him to gather the anecdotes and geographical information that came to constitute Arizona Place Names. For this first toponymic encyclopedia of Arizona, Barnes compiled information from published histories, federal and state government documents, and reminiscences of "old timers, Indians, Mexicans, cowboys, sheep-herders, historians, any and everybody who had a story to tell as to the origin and meaning of Arizona names." The result is a book chock full of oddments, humor, and now-forgotten lore, which belongs on the night table as well as in the glove compartment. Barnes` original Arizona Place Names has become a booklover`s favorite and is much in demand. The University of Arizona Press is pleased to reissue this classic of Arizoniana, which remains as useful and timeless as it was more than half a century ago.

Native American Place Names in Mississippi

Native American Place Names in Mississippi

$50

Biloxi. Tunica. Pascagoula. Yazoo. Tishomingo. Yalobusha. Tallahatchie. Itta Bena. Yockanookany. Bogue Chitto. These and hundreds of other place names of Native American origin are scattered across the map of Mississippi. Described by writer Willie Morris as "the mysterious, lost euphonious litany," such colorful names, which were given by the Choctaw, Chickasaw, and other tribes, contribute significantly to the state's sense of place. Yet the general public is largely unaware of exact meanings and tribal roots. Native American Place Names in Mississippi is the first reference book devoted to a subject of interest to residents and visitors alike. From large rivers and towns to tiny creeks and rural communities, Keith A. Baca identifies the most likely meanings of many names with more than one recorded interpretation. He corrects misconceptions that have arisen over the years and translates numerous names for the first time. For the benefit of travelers, he provides the location of each named place. To bring attention to often inconspicuous and unmarked streams he also indicates points where highways cross rivers and creeks with Native American appellations. Sidebars present Native American history, legends, and myths that surround these enigmatic and alluring designations. Formerly an archaeologist with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, Keith A. Baca is an independent researcher and writer living in Starkville, Mississippi. He is the author of the award-winning Indian Mounds of Mississippi: A Visitor's Guide .
