Movies on the Move

There are many reasons why you might consider buying one of the latest mobile phones with all the proverbial bells and whistles.  For me one of the many advantages is the fact that I can copy DVDs and Music and store them on my iPhone.  It’s almost like having a mini Cineplex in your pocket.

In the last couple of years the capacity for storage has increased at an amazing rate. I remember   back in 1998 taking a trip to my local PC superstore to purchase my first laptop. The sales guy was so excited to tell me about large capacity hard drive.  “If you buy this machine your storage worries are over.  It has a state of the art 4.5 GB main hard drive” He said with a smile as wide as the queue for the toilets at a Rolling Stones concert.  We have come a long way since then, with the latest iPods with hard drives up to 160 GB and about the size of a 1956 gold plated cigarette case.  If you are a movie buff, you will be able to load your mobile device with tens of full length movies and thousands of songs, audio books and photos etc.

There are other ways of watching movies on the move. Some like to take their laptops with them or you may have seen the portable DVD players on sale? Both are good and have advantages and disadvantages, for instance a Laptop has it’s large screen but yet it’s bulky and some of the older models battery life can be awful and the purpose built DVD players wont really fit in your pocket unless you are still walking around in your 1980s gear with a jacket the size of a large sack of the finest Irish potatoes!

 For somebody going for a hospital stay or a long holiday, having a collection of movies on your player is a breath of fresh air and can give one something to look forward to at the end of the day. The converters you need for ripping DVDs to mobile phone devices are called DVD to 3GP, Zune converters for Zune players, DVD to PSP for Sony and for iPod I would recommend the ImToo DVD to iPod converter or Popcorn 3 by Roxio.  A lot of handheld players these days offer a widescreen 16:9 option as well as standard 4:3 (Like your old square TV).  The picture quality is excellent and generally is converted from your DVD to what is called MP4, which is a compression system a little like MP3 for audio.  Sound is also fantastic and with a good set of earphones you may as well be in your favourite movie theatre.
