Watch The Top 5 Mafia Movies In High Definition
Everyone loves a good mafia old-fashioned mafia flick. Directors like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola have captured the imagination of the world with their chilling portrayals of organized crime. Hundreds of mobster movies have been made ever since the mob has been around, but only a few have remained the classics they deserve to be.
Here’s a list of the top 5 Mafia movies of all time:
1. The Godfather (1972)
Based on a book by Mario Puzo, “The Godfather” is the first of an epic three-part trilogy that follows the life of the fictional Corleone crime family. It stars Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, Robert Duvall, and James Caan. In fact, before “The Godfather” came out Al Pacino was a relatively unknown actor at the time. His now infamous and captivating role as Michael Corleone launched him to international stardom. Remember the scene where Sunny (James Caan) gets gunned down just outside of New York? Scenes like this have to be watched only on a high definition satellite TV.
2. The Godfather II (1974)
When does a sequel ever make a top 5 list? Well this one does, it just can’t be ignored that this is one of the best gangster movies ever made. Again based on a novel by Mario Puzo, the saga of the Corleone crime family continues. Michael is sent away to retrace his roots in Sicily (and run from the law), and finds himself unable to escape the violence that constantly follows the lives of the Cosa Nostra. Nominated for a staggering 11 Academy Awards “The Godfather II” brought in 6 Oscars.
3. Goodfellas (1990)
Directed by Martin Scorsese, “Goodfellas” follows the amazing true-life story of renowned mafia man Henry Hill. Hill had Italian blood, but was also half Irish, which in the world of Italian mafia makes it impossible to become a “made man”. Because of this Henry Hill was always trying to prove his worth to attain some level of power in the organized crime world. This film was nominated for 1 Academy Award.
4. Casino (1994)
An epic true-life mafia tail based on a book of the same name. The story follows Sam Rothstein (Robert De Nero), an ace gambling man who is called upon by the mob to watch over newly constructed casinos in Las Vegas. Things are going rather smoothly until he marries the self obsessed Ginger (Sharon Stone) who marries for the money and the fame. Things fall apart fast for Sam, but somehow through the years he still manages to keep things together while everyone else around him is falling to pieces. Directed by Martin Scorsese, this film was awarded numerous Academy and Golden Globe awards.
5. Scarface (1983)
Everyone remembers the classic line “say hello to my little friend” as the cocaine induced Tony Montana (Al Pacino) goes out with a blaze of glory and the end of “Scarface”. A scene only to be seen watched in high definition. Many consider this to be one of Al Pacino’s most memorable roles. He really dug into this character making the violent nature of the film stand out that much more. Based on Howard Hawks’ original of the same name, “Scarface” was written by Oliver Stone, and directed by Brian De Palma.

Montreal's Irish Mafia $21.95 Their names resonate with organized crime in Montreal: the Matticks, MacAllisters, Johnstons and Griffins, and Peter Dunie Ryan. They are the Irish equivalent of the infamous Rizzuto and Cotroni families, and the "Mom" Bouchers and Walter Stadnicks of the Hells Angels. Award-winning producer, journalist and author D’Arcy O’Connor narrates the genesis and rise to power of one of Montreal’s most powerful, violent and colorful criminal organizations. It is the West End Gang, whose members controlled the docks and fought the Hells Angels and Mafia for their share of the city’s prostitution, gambling, loan sharking and drug dealing. At times, they did not disdain forging alliances with rival gangs when huge profits were at stake, or when a killing needed to be carried out. The West End Gang—the Irish Mafia of Montreal—is a legendary beast. They sprang out of the impoverished southwest of the city, some looking for ways to earn enough just to survive, some wanting more than a job in an abattoir or on a construction site. In that sense, they were no different from other immigrants from Italy and other European countries. A shortcut to wealth was their common goal. And Montreal, with its burgeoning post-WWII population, was ripe for the picking. The Irish Mob made headlines with a spectacular Brinks robbery in 1976, using the money to broker a major heroin and cocaine trafficking ring. It took over the Port of Montreal, controlling the flow of drugs into the city, drugs which the Mafia funnelled to New York. The West End Gang had connections to the cocaine cartel in Colombia; hashish brokers in Morocco and France; and marijuana growers in Mexico. The gang imported drugs on an enormous scale. One bust that took place off the coast of Angola in 2006 involved 22.5 tonnes of hashish, destined for Montreal. The West End Gang is a ripping tale that unveils yet another chapter in Montreal’s colorful criminal underworld. |
