BERNARD SHAW'S "ARMS AND THE MAN":AN ALLEGORICAL PLAY

BERNARD SHAW’S ARMS AND THE MAN: AN ALLEGORICAL PLAY

AYOOLA AKINKUNMI OLAMIDE

mide_ayoola2002@yahoo.com

George Bernard Shaw was one of the greatest Irish writers. Among his contemporaries early writers were Samuel Beckett, W.B Yeats, Henry James, James Joyce, T.S Eliot and Woolf.

Shaw as he was fondly called was born on July 26, 1856 in Dublin, Ireland. His father, from the protestant Irish upper class was an unsuccessful businessman and alcoholic, while his mother was a poor singer. As a result of this, it was self- striving for the children. Shaw attended both Protestant and Catholic Day schools before he took a clerical job at the age of 16. When he was 20 years, he joined his mother and sisters in London after his parents’ marriage failed in 1876. Bernard Shaw imbibed a sense of the ridiculous and love of anti-climax from his father. He was a lover of arguments who believed that theatre must do away with the drama of romantic (unrealistic) to the drama of edification (moral realism). His plays are didactic in nature. He uses his play to espouse and expose the hypocrisy, stupidity and conventionality of the modern ways of life, most especially war and its effects. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925 but he refused the prize money, instead he arranged for the money to go toward funding the translation of Swedish literature into English language. Shaw, a prolific playwright wrote fifty plays and he died a vegetarian, who neither took alcohol nor coffee, in his country home at Ayot, St. Lawrence on the 2nd of November, 1950 at the age of 94.

Arms and the Man: An Allegorical Play

A work of literature is said to be allegorical when it has a double meaning, that is, behind a simple tale, readers can perceive a great truth or moral lesson. This is the situation in Bernard Shaw’s play Arms and the Man.

The play Arms and the Man is set in Bulgaria in late 1885.It is about the war between the Bulgarians and Serbians. In the 19th Century war was a regular occurrence in Europe – Napoleonic War and Crimean war.

The play is a satire on the concept of war, heroism and glory. Shaw was of the opinion that those who wage wars are stupid; since a conflict brings nothing good. He believed conflicts should be settled by other means but not through wars. Majors Paul Petkoff and Segius Saranoff make known unfairness of wars:

“I won the battle the wrong way when our

Worthy Russian generals were losing it the

right way. In short, I upset their plans,

      and wounded their self-esteem.”       P.41

The playwright in order to show his bias against war ridicules the key war personalities:

“Nine soldiers out of ten are born fools

I’ve no ammunition. What use are cartridges

In battle? I always carry chocolate instead; and

I finished the last cake of that hour ago”   P.25

“You can always tell an old soldier by the inside

of his holsters and cartridge boxes. The young

ones carry pistols and cartridges; The old ones, grubs. ”

                                                                   P.26

Shaw’s mission in the play is a call for consonance in the war. This is revealed in subsequent professional relation, that is, the cause for consonance between Petkoff and Saranoff on one hand and Bluntschli on the other hand. The reader or audience is surprised that the unexpected arrival of Bluntschli is warmly welcomed by Petkoff and Saranoff. For progress and peace, we need cooperation, tolerance and unity in this modern world and not war.

Dramaturgy:

Arms and the Man is a comedy because the principal characters are strong enough to overcome the obstacles to their happiness. The play ends as captain Bluntschli and Riana Petkoff are looking forward to getting married and earning comfortable income, Thereby giving the readers a familiar happy ending. The fact is that the play is also a serio-comic because a serious issue– war and its effects, is discussed all through, in a funny manner. The play is of low mimetic move, that is, about the real life experiences of the commoners and the oppressed due to the following factors:

  1. It is about simple everyday issues, that is, the principal concerns of the play are those of the everyday happenings among common people. The play is not centred on the high and mighty. It is true to life and it has sympathy with ordinary people. This reflects in the language, plot and setting which are considerately simple. In essence, the play possesses the quality of verisimilitude, that is, illusion of reality or semblance of truth.
  2. The values and assumptions in the play are firmly low mimetic, that is, they are romantic values, radicalism and change of opinions. For instance Sergius abandons most of his empty heroic attitude, breaks his engagement to Riana and makes plans to marry the housemaid (Louka). Bluntschli is also able to convince the Petkoff that through an inheritance from his father he has more than ample means to cater for Riana and the Petkoffs are glad to settle for a son-in-law less socially prominent than Sergius.
  3.      The play is a blend of illusion and reality. For   instance, Catherine Petkoff sees Sergius to be a true hero; this is both romance and reality. Also the idea that Riana saves Bluntschli’s life (Pp. 20-26) is both romance and reality. Therefore, in respect to narrative pattern and theme. Arms and the Man is solidly in the mainstream of low- mimetic comedy.?

For a comparatively small island, Ireland has made a disproportionatly large contribution to world literature in all its branches. Irish literature encompasses the Irish and English languages. The islands most widelyknown literary works are undoubtedly in English. Particularly famous examples of such works are those of James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, and Irelands four winners of the Nobel Prize for Literature; William Butler Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, Samuel Beckett and Seamus Heaney. Irelands oldest literary traditions, however, are found in the Irish language, referred to simply as Irish. Indeed, Irish has the third oldest literature in Europe (after Greek and Latin) and the most significant body of written literature (both ancient and recent) of any Celtic language. Furthermore, the historic influence of Irish language traditions, such as a strong oral tradition of legends and poetry, has helped make much English Literature in Ireland quite distinctive from that in other countries. Irish Children's Literature and Culture

Irish Children's Literature and Culture

$110

Irish Children's Literature and Culture looks critically at Irish writing for children from the 1980s to the present, examining the work of many writers and illustrators and engaging with major genres, forms, and issues, including the gothic, the speculative, picturebooks, ethnicity, and globalization. It contextualizes modern Irish children's literature in relation to Irish mythology and earlier writings, as well as in relation to Irish writing for adults, thereby demonstrating the complexity of this fascinating area. What constitutes a "national literature" is rarely straightforward, and it is especially complex when discussing writing for young people in an Irish context. Until recently, there was only a slight body of work that could be classified as "Irish children's literature" in comparison with Ireland's contribution to adult literature in the twentieth century. The contributors to the volume examine a range of texts in relation to contemporary literary and cultural theory, and children's literature internationally, raising provocative questions about the future of the topic. Irish Children's Literature and Culture is essential reading for those interested in Irish literature, culture, sociology, childhood, and children's literature. Valerie Coghlan , Church of Ireland College of Education, Dublin, is a librarian and lecturer. She is a former co-editor of Bookbird: An International Journal of Children's Literature. Between 1968 and 1998, Ireland saw an intense struggle for national selfdetermination waged on its own soil. This struggle was an extension of a centurieslong fight to free Ireland from British rule and establish an Irish Republic encompassing the entirety of the island. The present work examines the literary productions of Irish Republicans and analyzes the ways in which this literature interrogates notions of history and negotiates power within continually evolving conceptions of nationalism. By examining Irish Republican texts written between the resumption of armed conflict in the north of Ireland in 1968 and the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, David F. Fanning places the literature produced by members of the Irish Republican movement within the context of Irish history as well as within the history of Irish literature, demonstrating Irish Republican literatures important place in discussions of the interplay between history and expression and between writing and warfare. In Tragedy and Irish Literature , McDonald considers the culture of suffering, loss, and guilt in the work of J.M. Synge, Sean O'Casey and Samuel Beckett. He applies external ideas of tragedy to the three dramatists and also discerns particular sorts of tragedy within their own work. While alert to the real differences between the three writers, the book also traces common themes and preoccupations. It identifies a conflict between form and content, between heightened language and debased reality as the hallmark of Irish tragedy.

AN IRISH MANUSCRIPT THE SUNNINESS OF IRISH LIFE. JAMES ANTHONY FROUDE has said many hard things of Irelandthat is, of Ireland as the battleground of political and social questionsbut he has paid an ungrudging and eloquent tribute tq the charms of Ireland, of the mountain, the lake, and the valley, and of its lighthearted and liumorous inhabitants. THe have heard much of the wrongs of Ireland, the miseries of Ireland, the crimes of Ireland, he writes every cloud has its sunny side, and, when all is said, Ireland is still the most beautiful island in the world and the Irish themselves, though their temperament is illmatched with ours, are still amongst the most interesting of peoples. Every cloud in Ireland has, indeed, its glint of sunshine. Thanlcs to the natural charms of the country, and the kindly, genial manners of the people, there is diffused through Irish life a warm, pleasant, stimulating influence, which is best described by the expressive and picturesque word sunny. That delightful quality of sunniness in Irish life is most appreciated by those who know the strain on mental and physical energies of living amid the perpetual rush and noise and excitement of a large and busy English city. After such an experience, one feels, while in Ireland, that there is no country in the world so fresh and reposeful as the Emerald Isle, with its perpetual touch of springno race so leisurely and restful as the Irishthat there is no land and no people so well adapted to reinvigorate an overworked frame or restore to cheerfulness a weary mind... THE IRISH SCHOOL OF ORATORY IN this age of clear business statements, when only the eloquence of argument and exposition is looked for, and when no moving issues stir mens blood, it has naturally fared hard with the oratory of passion and the opinion of most people seems to be that all elevated language is necessarily false and hollow. As the great orators of Ireland, Plunket alone excepted, were vehement, figurative, impassioned and rhythmical, they have suffered most by the, fall in parliamentary style, and they are in danger of total neglect at the hands of this generation. One excuse for this undervaluing of Irish oratory may be giren. A crowd of servile imitators, destitute of fire or taste, mapped up their pigmy thoughts in words and images fit only for arguments of the highest concern, and these turgid declaimers brought undeserved condemnation on the men whose lofty manner they had sedulously burlesqued...
