Stephen Lucius Gwynn (18641950) was an Irish journalist, biographer, author, poet and Protestant nationalist politician and MP. in the House of Commons. He served as officer with an Irish regiment during World War I. After graduating he spent ten years from 1886 tutoring as a schoolmaster, for a time in France which created a lifelong interest in French culture, as expressed in Praise of France (1927). By 1896 he had developed an interest in writing, becoming a writer and journalist in London focusing on English themes, until he came into contact with the emerging Irish literary revival. This was the beginning of a long and prolific career as a writer covering a wide range of literary genres, making the eighteenth century his particular specialism. He wrote numerous books on travel and topography of his own homeland. Gwynn returned to Ireland in 1904 when he entered politics. From the 1920s Gwynn devoted himself to writing, covering political events as Irish correspondent to the Observer. Irish Phonology

Irish Phonology

$89.22

The phonology of the Irish language varies from dialect to dialect; there is no standard pronunciation of the language. Therefore, this article focuses on phenomena that pertain generally to most or all dialects, and on the major differences among the dialects. Detailed discussion of the dialects can be found in the specific articles: Ulster Irish, Connacht Irish, and Munster Irish. Irish phonology has been studied as a discipline since the late 19th century, with numerous researchers publishing descriptive accounts of dialects from all regions where the language is spoken. More recently, theoretical linguists have also turned their attention to Irish phonology, producing a number of books, articles, and doctoral theses on the topic. One of the most important aspects of Irish phonology is the fact that almost all consonants come in pairs, with one having a broad pronunciation and the other a slender one. Broad consonants are velarized, that is, the back of the tongue is pulled back and slightly up in the direction of the soft palate while the consonant is being articulated. Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 122 Publication Date: 2009/12/23 Language: English Dimensions: 5.98 x 9.01 x 0.28 inches

The Pimsleur Method provides the most effective language-learning program ever developed. The Pimsleur Method gives you quick command of Irish structure without tedious drills. Learning to speak Irish can actually be enjoyable and rewarding. The key reason most people struggle with new languages is that they aren`t given proper instruction, only bits and pieces of a language. Other language programs sell only pieces -- dictionaries; grammar books and instructions; lists of hundreds or even thousands of words and definitions; audios containing useless drills. They leave it to you to assemble these pieces as you try to speak. Pimsleur enables you to spend your time learning to speak the language rather than just studying its parts. When you were learning English, could you speak before you knew how to conjugate verbs? Of course you could. That same learning process is what Pimsleur replicates. Pimsleur presents the whole language as one integrated piece so you can succeed.WITH PIMSLEUR YOU GET: Grammar and vocabulary taught together in everyday conversation, Interactive audio-only instruction that teaches spoken language organically, The flexibility to learn anytime, anywhere, 30-minute lessons designed to optimize the amount of language you can learn in one sitting.Millions of people have used Pimsleur to gain real conversational skills in new languages quickly and easily, wherever and whenever -- without books, written exercises, or drills.

The Essential Library For Irish-Americans

The Essential Library For Irish-Americans

$6.99

Ireland is in the news and a center of international attention in this decade. This book is an instructive, opinionated, annotated list of books that anyone in America who is Irish or interested in the Irish ought to read. Morgan Llywelyn has chosen these books for their accuracy and their pleasures, and describes them in clear, concise language that is in itself a pleasure. It does not summarize the contents but rather tells you what experiences are in store for ther reader of each individual book listed. The books are listed in broad categories, such as biography and autobiography, history, poetry, fiction, and many more. This guide will be a useful companion to travellers to Ireland, will give insight into the Irish heritage of Irish Americans, will be a guide to further reading, and perhaps even to building family libraries in the home. Morgan Llywelyn, the author of fine novels of the past of Ireland, such as Lion of Ireland, and the present, such as 1916, has both the knowledge and the credibility to present this book to the reading public.

Dublins Trade in Books 15501800

Dublins Trade in Books 15501800

$234.78

This is the first book to examine the Irish book trade as exemplified by the bookselling practices of Dublin. Previous studies have focused mainly on the English trade discussing Irish practices only as a footnote. This study focuses on Ireland, and draws on a wealth of material including daybooks, imprints, advertisements, and books themselves to build a detailed picture of the fortunes and practices of Irish bookselling. Pollard not only discusses relations with London, but looks in detail at the market at home, the structure and economic background of the Dublin trade, what books were published, and for whom. In addition, Pollard examines the significant expansion of the book trade during the 18th century, and provides the first survey of imports and exports revealing just how many books entered Ireland, and the supply of Dublin books to overseas markets. In The Language of the Blue Books, Gwyneth Tyson Roberts examines the Reports of the Commissioners of Inquiry into the State of Education in Wales, published in 1847. This report, also known as the ?Treachery of the Blue Books,? castigated the Welsh working class as ignorant, lazy, and immoral. Roberts analyzes the historical, social, and political contexts within which this report was published, arguing that its choice and use of language undermines its own claims to authority and objectivity.

Restoring to print two of Chomsky's most famous and popular books in one omnibus volume, On Language features some of the noted linguist and political critic's most informal and highly accessible work, making it an ideal introduction to his thought. In Part I, Language and Responsibility , Chomsky presents a fascinating self-portrait of his political, moral, and linguistic thinking. In Part II, Reflections on Language , Chomsky explores the more general implications of the study of language and offers incisive analyses of the controversies among psychologists, philosophers, and linguists over fundamental questions of language. " Language and Responsibility is a well-organized, clearly written, and comprehensive introduction to Chomsky's thought." —New York Times Book Review. " Language and Responsibility brings together in one readable volume Chomsky's positions on issues ranging from politics and philosophy of science to recent advances in linguistic theory... The clarity of presentation at times approaches that of Bertrand Russell in his political and more popular philosophical essays." —Contemporary Psychology. " Reflections on Language is profoundly satisfying and impressive. It is the clearest and most developed account of the case of universal grammar and of the relations between his theory of language and the innate faculties of mind responsible for language aquisition and use." —Patrick Flanagan
