Artificial Woodlands, Semite Regular, and Average Woodlands in Irish Forestry
At one time, the British Isles was covered in forest and now only fragments of those great forests continue to be. Human activity, either indirectly or directly, has transformed a variety of of the remaining forests. The vegetation, otherwise known as semi typical vegetation, is quite most likely from one of two origins.
One possibility is when the man in reality puts usual grassland or ordinary Heath into pasture, or when he entirely clears a native forest. In this way he perfectly modifies the usual vegetation, more or less. Or it might be vegetation initiated by man, but of a type which might naturally exist in the given environment. This vegetation may eventually come to show little or no trace of its artificial origin.
Good examples of this second type are arable grassland plantations. This form of plantation would have at one time grown ordinary Oakwood, or permanent pasture composed of native species of grasses. The first pasturage would have produced a similar style and would have approximated the original grassland.
But we must clearly exclude from the category of semi ordinary vegetation plant communities composed of or dominated by alien species planted and maintained by human agency. Included in these vegetation plant communities would have been Douglas fir plantations or doubtless wheat crops. These vegetation plant communities introduced dominant species and accompanying health conditions. This is even if these vegetation species were alien to the standard countryside.
British and Irish Woodlands are slowly becoming composed of these conifers of international origin such as the Sitka spruce. It's outside the realm of this article to go too deeply into the scientific study of the ecology of forestry.
We have to confine our attention therefore to be ordinary and semi customary communities. When we evaluate both of these examples we will see that the domination of our native woodlands is by native trees. These native trees include oak, beech, ash, birch, pine, and alder.
The semi habitual communities are what most of these woods are composed of. A few, are very few, may be regarded as wholly ordinary. Either these entirely normal communities are quite virgin or so little changed by human interference that they're essentially the same things as they would have been if the country had not been occupied by men.
Of the much larger number of semi standard woodland it is unfortunate that we can rarely distinguish with any certainty between those which have been planted and those that are direct descendants of natural woodland. There has been exploitation going on in this normal wood land for centuries.

Whitman and the Irish $21 Though Walt Whitman created no Irish characters in his early works of fiction, he did include the Irish as part of the democratic portrait of America that he drew in Leaves of Grass. He could hardly have done otherwise. In 1855, when the first edition of Leaves of Grass was published, the Irish made up one of the largest immigrant populations in New York City and, as such, maintained a cultural identity of their own. All of this "Irishnesso swirled about Whitman as he trod the streets of his Mannahatta, ultimately becoming part of him and his poetry. As members of the working class, famous authors, or close friends, the Irish left their mark on Whitman the man and poet. In Whitman and the Irish, Joann Krieg convincingly establishes their importance within the larger framework of Whitman studies. |
