The city of Toronto is situated in the province of Ontario in Canada. The city is the capital of the province and Canada's largest metropolitan center. Located in southwestern Ontario, the city sits next to the shorelines of Lake Ontario. Toronto is frequently known for its financial and economic districts including large corporations and the Toronto Stock Exchange. Various corporations including companies focusing on medical research, software production, transportation, telecommunications, media, film and television are found in the city.

Almost half the city's population is made up of immigrants, creating an ethnically diverse core. The name of Toronto is believed to be from an Iroquois word loosely translated to refer to trees standing in the water. European settlers (mostly of Irish descent) founded the city after the Huron tribes. The city was made official in March 1834 and has grown greatly since.

Area Geography
The city is made up of long areas of waterfront shores, a large harbour and various islands. The area of the city limits is 243 square miles (630 square km). Toronto is marked by two significant highways around its borders (highway 427 in the west and Steeles Avenue to the north) as well as 3 major bodies of water including Lake Ontario and Etobicoke Creek to the south and the Rouge River to the east.

Tiny bodies of water such as tributaries, feed into the Toronto Harbour and have created small islands, ravines and escarpments. Thick forests have grown in the ravine areas. Because of this distinctive, parks, recreational trails and outdoor sites have been developed. Even though the ravines supply drainage solutions, flooding often still occurs due to heavy rainfall. The range in city elevation is from 686 feet (209 m) up to 246 feet (75 m).

Demographics
The most recent census (2006) showed Toronto's population to be 2.5 million. The metro population is 5.1 million. The average age in the city is 36.9. People aged 65 and older compose 13.6% of the population. Nearly 50 % of the population are immigrants (49%) with the remaining majority comprised of people from European origins. The city has numerous cultural centers including: Little Italy, Chinatown, Greektown, Kensington Market, Little India and others. While 52% of the population are British, French, Italian, and Irish descent, 46% are part of a visible minority group. Some examples are: South Asian (12%), Black (8%), Chinese (11%), and Filipino (4%). Toronto's gender population is: 54% female to 48% male.

The cultural climate of the city is constantly adjusting with approximately 100,000 immigrants arriving each year. While English remains the dominant spoken language in the city, Chinese and Italian are employed frequently at work. Emergency services now can reply to calls in 150 different languages.

Weather
The environment in Toronto can be classified as being humid and moderate. The winter season is cool while the summers are warm and humid. Toronto has distinct season changes. Often there are daily temperature variances during the winter.

The urban nature of the city and location next to the water provides steady temperatures in the core of the city. Often weather conditions such as fog, seasonal lags and strong winds come about because of the lake.

Disruptions in the city can be caused by snowstorms that are mixed with ice and rain during the winter. Cold snaps often occur in winter season lowering the temperature below -10 C compared to average temperatures 5 to 12 C . Summer weeks are marked with humidity, and heatwaves. Summers often average around 23 C (73 F) to 31 C (88 F), but occasionally extensive stretches of extreme heat can be experienced with soaring temperatures of 35 C (95 F) and above making the heat nearly unbearable. Thunderstorms are frequent as is precipitation during the summer.
