Josh Taerk - The legacy of folk music
The Folk music is the social and cultural history of the struggling human spirit in song. Once, traditional folk songs easily identified particular cultures. Irish, English, American folk songs identified the early stirrings of the individual seeking cultural identity. From those traditions, in the mid 20th century, emerged a need to seek social identity, the right to justice and freedom. Until, in the 21st century, folk songs are marked by a need for individual respect and understanding.
The legacy of traditional folk songs lives on in dance. Of particular note was the emergence of River dance in the 20th century. There was a special moment in the movie when he danced to traditional Greek folk music. As a result, we have a renewed appreciation of traditional cultures through traditional folksong.
With the emergence, in the 1960's, of the civil rights movement in the U.S., folk music was there. The raw and rasping voice of Bob Dylan singing out a need to find answers in the wind, for all to have the right to freedom, cannot be forgotten. But he was not alone. Joan Baez, representing her Mexican heritage, sang of the plight of minority groups. In fact, there was a burst of folk singers at this time crying out for social justice.
By the 1970's, a new folk voice was emerging. Perhaps Canadian Joni Mitchell represented the new social tone in folk song. At least in music, the plea for understanding between races in the folksong of the 1960's seemed to be answered. It was a wonderful legacy legacy!
And in the 1980's merged the reggae of Jamaican Bob Marley. The sound and rhythm may have been a distinctive, new sound on the musical horizon, but the lyrics, at the heart of the music, were the lyrics of the individual, longing to be heard in troubled times. Folk music was the heartbeat of reggae.
Till the early 1990's there was little music that was clearly folk song. Street rap rhythms had emerged from reggae with the solid voice from urban cultures. perhaps the "pure" folk song of cultural tradition is little more than a curiosity in a "period piece" movie. In its place is the essence of folk song in almost every musical genre.

Folk $67 The traditional songs, dances, and legends of ordinary people in the United States have long served as a means of communication and a source of entertainment. Each group brought its unique song and dance music to America: The Irish brought jigs and reels, the African-American slaves work and dance songs, Hispanics their corridos and polkas, Cajuns their waltzes and two-steps. The interaction between these groups created the many rich hybrids that are American folk music. |

Discovering Folk Music $35 From indigenous music to Pete Seeger and Bruce Springsteen singing ÒThis Land Is Your LandÓ side-by-side at the pre-inaugural concert for our first African American presidentÑfolk music has been at the center of AmericaÕs history. Thomas Jefferson wooed his bride-to-be with fiddle playing. Stephen Foster captured the mood of our country in transition. The Carter Family adapted music from across the pond to Appalachia. Paul Robeson carried folk music of many lands to the world stage. Woody GuthrieÕs dust bowl ballads spoke to the common man, while Sixties protest music put folk on the map, following the Kingston TrioÕs hit, ÒTom Dooley.Ó Folk music has evolved with AmericaÕs changing landscape, celebrating its multi-cultural traditions. From Irish step dancers to rap, parlor songs to Dixieland, blues to classical, Discovering Folk Music presents the genre as surprisingly diverse, every bit the product of our national melting pot. Demonstrating continuing relevance of folk music in our everyday livesÑwhile spotlighting an amazing array of personalitiesÑthe book provides special emphasis on the folk revival era, when Dylan, Baez, Odetta, and Peter, Paul and Mary sang out and influenced the next generation, including Shawn Colvin, Ani DiFranco, and others. These deep roots pervade with today's artists on the "fringes of folk." Interviews with such legends as Janis Ian, Tom Paxton, Jean Ritchie, and Nora Guthrie, WoodyÕs daughter, add color. Discovering Folk Music is a ground-breaking look at 21st-century folk music in our rapidly changing digital world, family-friendly while ripe for rediscovery by the Woodstock generation. |
