Q&A With Graeme McDowell(part two)

Q.

Tiger Woods is not dominating now. Is that good for the sport?

A.

I think it's good for the sport. Obviously, the last eight months has been a rough patch for Tiger and obviously golf as well. Given the global economic climate, golf has been through a tough few years for manufacturers, tournaments and sponsors. And then you throw in Tiger's rough year. But I think it's important to realize that golf is very healthy. I think we had 14 first-time winners this year on the PGA Tour. It's been a great year. A bit of a coming-out year for a lot of young players, myself included. I think we have to realize that golf is very, very healthy and it's a good thing to show to the people and to sponsors around the world.

Q.

Your long game is always strong. Is that from playing tough courses in Ireland?

A.

Obviously, my full swing is quite idiosyncratic. I've got quite a strong left wrist position at the top of my swing, but always been able to deliver the club into the ball very squarely and solidly. (Callaway X-22 Left Irons)And my long game — I've always been pretty straight off the tee and have been a pretty decent long and medium iron player. My upbringing on links courses in Ireland obviously has a lot to do with that.

Q.

Are you worried that you may become a one-hit wonder?

A.

I think we are all very aware of the pitfalls of complacency and feeling like you've made it and not resetting your goals. But I've got a good team of people around me who will keep me motivated and keep me working hard. Callaway keeps providing me with excellent equipment, and I'm certainly not going to take anything for granted. I'm 31 years old and hopefully with the best 10 years of golf ahead of me so I'll be working hard to stay on top of things.

Q.

What is your opinion about your play since winning the Open?

A.

Since the Open, physically, I've felt O.K., but certainly at the British Open and the P.G.A. Championship, I wasn't really myself. I was a bit mentally and emotionally drained from the four to five weeks post-Pebble. There were changes in my life, a busy schedule, and I never really took time to reflect. (Callaway Diablo Edge Irons)I took four weeks off since the P.G.A., and I'm feeling a lot fresher in mind and body and looking forward to the end of the season with the Race to Dubai in Europe and the Ryder Cup.

Q.

Was there a celebrity or noteworthy person you were you thrilled to meet after you won the Open?

A.

I got to go on the set of "Entourage" the next day and hung out with those boys. I'm a big fan of the show and Doug Ellin and the crew. That was pretty fun. I'm not sure who was more excited, me to be there or those guys, who are all golf nuts and got to play with the U.S. Open trophy. It was a fun deal.

Q.

Do you have a reminder to do something like keep a shoulder tucked, when making a shot?

A.

Swing thoughts. I'm always trying to work the club away from the ball, sort of outside my hands, making sure it doesn't get too close to my right hip on the way back. And then really just trying to keep my transition calm and as under control as I possible can. And just trying to swing the club with my big muscles as much as I can is a big thought for me.

Q.

You're only 31, but do young stars like Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Martin Kaymer make you feel old already?

A.

You do. I'm 31 years old and supposed to be in my prime. But you wonder, is the 21st century golfer a little different from golfers in the '80s and '90s? When you look around at the Matteo Manasseros and the Rory McIlroys and the Ricky Fowlers, the list of young players goes on and on. But you look at Miguel Ángel Jiménez and Vijay Singh, these guys playing well in their forties as well. But I still think the 30s is a key time period for a golfer. It just says a lot about how good these young players are coming out of college.

Q.

Ireland has a great music tradition. Who are your favorite musicians?

A.

I'm a big fan of the group Snow Patrol. They are from just outside Belfast in Northern Ireland. Big fan of all their albums and they're local boys. And also The Script and Coldplay. My iPod is as varied an iPod as you'll ever see, from classic to AC/DC and heavy rock.

Q.

You're an avid snooker player. Does it help you relax from the pressures of golf?

A.

I'm a big fan of the game of snooker. It's like a bigger, tougher version of pool. I'm currently building a house in Orlando and putting a championship snooker table in my game room. It's a very frustrating game. Many similarities to golf in the way you approach shots, and it's a game I want to master later in my life.

Q.

How did you reward yourself after winning the Open?

A.

Well, the house in Orlando was already in progress, so I guess the finishing details, the furniture and the cinema room. (Callaway X-24 Hot Irons)That stuff is pretty much hoovering most of my cash right now. And I'm certainly enjoying it; it's a great process. But if I was over my budget, the U.S. Open win has made the budget a little bit more irrelevant, shall we say.

Q.

You are a car enthusiast. Did Jay Leno offer you advice about getting a car when you were on his show?

A.

He's a bit of a fan of American classic muscle cars, which are not really my area of expertise. I've had a few cars growing up. I had a couple of Porsches, but now I have a Range Rover in the U.K. and a Range Rover coming in the U.S., so I guess I'm a bit more conservative in my old age.

Q.

What is your favorite place for Irish food in New York?

A.

I haven't spent enough time in New York to really comment on that, but it's a city I do enjoy. The last place I ate there was called Butter.

Q.

What is your favorite pub in Ireland?

A.

Favorite pub in Ireland. Wow! There are so many. If I was to choose one, it would probably be the Harbor Bar in Portrush. It's one of the best pints of Guinness in that part of the world, and it's just somewhere I love to go. It's home. It feels like home.
