The Irish and the Spanish Civil War $33.74 The outbreak of the Spanish Civil War threw Irish politics, north and south of the border, into turmoil. Tragic events in Spain aroused emotive responses across the spectrum of Irish society. In contrast to most other communities of the British Isles, citizens of the Irish Free State were mainly proFranco. But many on the left felt a strong identification with the plight of the Republic. Ireland sent large organized bodies of men to fight on opposite sides in the Spanish Civil War. The International Brigade volunteers were led by the IRA warrior, Frank Ryan. Their rivals were mostly members of the semifascist Blueshirts and were commanded by the exleader of that movement, General Eoin ODuffy. In late 1936, two enemy crusades Communist and Catholic left Ireland to fight it out in Spain. This book tells the fascinating story of what happened to these two sides. The Politics of the Irish Civil War $45 Based on extensive archival research this book situates the Irish civil war in the general process of decolonization in the twentieth century, and explains why divisions over the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 proved so formative in the development of the Irish state. Each chapter is devoted to a particular aspect of the war and many new areas are explored. These include the role the doctrine of self-determination played in the Sinn Fein movement, the fate of numerous peace initiatives, the power struggle between de Valera and Liam Lynch within the IRA, and the impact of the civil war on the wider civil society. The last three chapters explore how the conflict has been interpreted by the actors themselves, as well as by historians. Combining perspectives drawn from history andpolitics, this book will interest not only students of Irish history, but also those interested in the comparative study of civil wars. |

The Greatest Brigade (Paperback) $27.67 The Irish Brigade played a key role in all the major battles including the Peninsula Campaign, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Petersburg, and Appomattox and wasn’t decommissioned until WWI. It was full of larger than life characters and effectively led by a charismatic commander who was court marshaled for revolutionary activity in Ireland and was dismissed to enable him to serve in the war. Some numbers say that this unit lost more than 4,000 soldiers, one of the largest body counts of any brigade, if not the largest. This is a tale of a critical and incredible fighting force, packed with immigrants that helped win the war not only through bravery and war tactics but also by scaring the English out of the war with threats of violence at home. It’s a story every Civil War history buff should know and it is told with page-turning excitement that has made Craughwell a bestselling history author. |

The Irish and the American Civil War $42.48 Why did the Irish participate in the American Civil War in such a great number? Why were they so special? German immigrants, for example, joined the war in just as a big number as the Irish did. But never did a unit that consisted of mainly Germans carry the colours or symbols of their homeland into a battle of the American Civil War like the Irish did.In this paper I want to clarify why the Irish had such a big impact on the American Civil war. Further, I want to show that the Irishmen fought for more than just the Confederation or the Union but for their home country and much more.
