Easy Methods To Make The Textbook Cup Of Tea

Everyone knows that there are all kinds of tea on the market. What you may not know is that you need to use specific brewing techniques for each type. If you don't use the right technique with the right type, you may end up brewing yourself a cup of BLEH instead of a cup of AAAAH!

Black teas are the most robust. Their rich, astringent flavor can be enjoyed on its own, or with milk and sugar (such as English or Irish Breakfast), or with lemon (such as Earl Grey). Black-teas generally contain about half the caffeine of coffee, but decaffeinated options are very common now and usually quite tasty.

Black-teas consist of dried and cured leaves, so it takes a good amount of effort to get the best flavor out. It should be steeped in boiling water for four to six minutes for the most flavor, or three to four for a slightly milder flavor. To tell if it is done brewing, watch for individual leaves to uncurl (if using loose leaf) or for the water to turn a uniform color without stirring (if using bags).

Green tea has become quite popular lately, probably due to the sheer abundance of flavors readily available. From the smoky, over-the-top Gunpowder, to the delicately floral jasmines, green-teas are a wonderful option for those who want all the depth of flavor but even less caffeine than black.

Most people automatically ruin green tea by brewing it in water that is too hot. Water should be 160 degrees Fahrenheit or less, in order to preserve the green color and delicate flavor. Green-teas are often good for brewing multiple pots, but watch carefully and beware of over-steeping: three to four minutes is the maximum steeping time for green teas.

White tea is just recently becoming popular. It has an even more delicate flavor than green, and has almost no caffeine in it. It should be steeped in water just slightly below boiling for between four and six minutes.

Herbal teas come in all kinds of flavors. Not content to just be a tasty beverage, many claim to have health benefits. Chamomile is good for relieving stress, mint for calming the stomach, and lemon or orange for a quick caffeine-free pick-me-up. You should always brew an herbal tea according to the directions that come with it, but in general these should be brewed longer and a lower temperature.

Tea is a delightful way to enjoy something truly good for you. It takes a little practice, but the best cup of tea is brewed when you slow down and take time to do it for yourself.

Irish Breakfast Black Tea, Box of 20 foil tea bags: K

$3.23

The Irish have always been great tea drinkers. They drink their tea brewed very strong. In fact, there is a common saying among the Irish that a proper cup of tea should be ''''strong enough for a mouse to trot on''''. Irish Breakfast, with its robust flavor, is usually enjoyed only in the morning (except for the Irish who drink it all day). Usually it is blended with an Assam tea base. Assam is a district in northeastern India that lies on the Indian-Burmese border. It produces more black tea than any other area on earth, with the probable exception of a few places in China. Assam’s tea gardens cover some four hundred thousand acres of verdant rolling plains on both sides of the mighty Brahmaputra River. Assam is proof that not all fine quality tea has to be high grown. This rainy valley is the birthplace of Indian tea. Robert Bruce discovered the plant growing wild here in 1823, and the first commercial lot of tea ever produced outside of China--eight chests in all--came from Assam in 1839. For our Irish breakfast tea, we use high quality, full bodied, robust Assam teas. The resulting blend is a dark brown tippy leaf that brews up a deep red liquor that is hearty, malty and rich in flavor. This tea is delicious with milk and sugar.

English Breakfast Decaf Tea by Stash Tea Company - 18 Tea Bags

English Breakfast Decaf Tea by Stash Tea Company - 18 Tea Bags

$3.62

For our decaffeinated English Breakfast we begin with a robust Nilgiri black tea from the Blue Mountains of south India. The tea is grown at an altitude of 6,000 to 7,000 feet, thus greatly enhancing its flavor. It is then decaffeinated using an advanced, completely natural European process that removes 99.5% of the caffeine leaving the tea leaves with all the flavor, color and aroma you expect from Stash premium black teas. The result is a distinctive, strong, rich tea. It may be enjoyed with milk or lemon (but not in combination, the lemon would curdle the milk). It also makes an exceptional iced tea. This flavorful tea is perfect to drink anytime of the day.The prototype for English Breakfast was developed over a hundred years ago by the Scottish Tea Master Drysdale, in Edinburgh. Marketed simply as "Breakfast Tea", it became popular in England due to the craze Queen Victoria created for all things Scottish. Tea shops in London, however, changed the name and sold it as "English Breakfast Tea". English Breakfast has become a favorite of tea drinkers worldwide and is the tea most often enjoyed during English High Tea.

By the 1700s tea at breakfast was part of the English lifestyle, having replaced the customary practice of drinking ale with breakfast! The prototype for English Breakfast was developed over a hundred years ago by the Scottish Tea Master Drysdale, in EdInburgh. It was marketed simply as ''Breakfast Tea''. It became popular in England due to the craze Queen Victoria created for all things Scottish (the summer home of Victoria and Albert was the Highland castle at Balmoral). Tea shops in London, however, changed the name and sold it as ''English Breakfast Tea''. English Breakfast has become a favorite of tea drinkers worldwide and is the tea most often enjoyed during English High Tea. It is a blend of fine black teas, often including some Keemun tea. Many tea authorities suggest that the Keemun tea blended with milk creates a bouquet that reminds people of ''toast hot from the oven'' and may be the original source for the name. Stash English Breakfast combines top quality black teas from premier tea gardens. We blend bright Ceylon tea from Sri Lanka, malty Assam and smooth Nilgiri teas from India and full bodied Keemun from China. The result is a very distinctive, strong, rich tea. It may be enjoyed with milk or lemon (but not in combination, the lemon would curdle the milk). It also makes an exceptional iced tea. This stimulating tea is the perfect morning wake-up drink.
