Know Your Togs – Winter & Summer Duvet Options

For the utmost in comfort, it’s a good idea to change your duvet according to the season. There’s nothing worse than feeling overheated on a hot summer’s night – or worse, feeling the cold when temperatures have dropped. With the latest advances in duvets, this no longer is a worry.

Duvets work by trapping heat from the body. The tog relates to the amount of heat a duvet can trap – the higher the tog, the warmer the duvet. A common misconception is that the tog rating is an indication of the quality of the duvet, i.e. the higher the tog, the more value for money. This is not the case!

Another misconception is that the tog rating is an indication of weight. This, again, is not true! A very lightweight 13.5 goosedown duvet will trap the same amount of warmth as a 13.5 tog synthetic duvet.

If you are looking to update your duvet, follow this advice to select the right tog for you:
1. Are you a man or a woman? Women’s bodies tend to be warmer, so women can get away with a lower tog rating.
2. Do you share a bed? Body heat generated by a second person adds to the warmth factor, so you may not need as high a tog rating.
3. Do you have a warm or cold bedroom? If your room tends to be on the fresh side, you may need to up the tog rating on your duvet to keep yourself snug.

Winter Duvet Options
• 13.5 tog is the most suitable duvet for the European climate providing warmth and snugness. This is the most popular tog rating sold on the Clerys Bed Store.
• 10.5 tog is right for you if you’re sharing a bed and your room is well heated.

Summer Duvet Options
• 4.5 tog is a good choice for the summer months – it won’t overheat you in the bed.

Duvet is sometimes confused with a comforter, although comforters go on top of the traditional sheets and blankets and are primarily decorative, while duvets are used alone.
