The secret is out – all-new Range Rover breaks cover

When most new cars enter the final phases of their testing before general release, secrecy is paramount. Manufacturers clad their new models in all manner of body-shielding covers in order to protect their highly-prized secrets from rival car-makers' gaze while carrying out all-important real-life tests intended to iron out any glitches before production goes into full swing.

But Land Rover is taking a different tack with the new Range Rover model, destined for showrooms in summer 2011. A fleet of several hundred pre-production models is now roaming the streets of ten of the world's biggest cities, clad not in the usual neutral body armour, but in highly distinctive ‘camouflage' disguises which actually tell people that the car underneath is the new Range Rover Evoque.

During their time spent wearing the one-off liveries, the vehicles are being evaluated in some of the toughest driving conditions in the world, as part of which feedback from covering millions of miles will be collected and evaluated, and then fed back to the Range Rover designers to enable them to make final tweaks to their new baby. The cars, built at Gaydon in Warwickshire, have been dispatched to London, New York, Paris, Berlin, Sydney, Sao Paulo, Shanghai, Madrid, Moscow and Milan – so it's fair to assume that they will be seen by several million people while they are out and about on their routine run-ins.

In their testing phase, it is also expected that the new Range Rover Evoques will encounter all types of weather conditions, as well as being subjected to the rigours of daily driving around some of the world's most traffic-clogged cities. A total of 20 countries were to be visited by the new Range Rovers, and they will be accompanied by engineers from the UK factory as they undergo their testing, which will be extended to 20 countries in all. In that time, more than 17,000 individual tests are expected to be carried out in conjunction with the 120 individual component suppliers which have helped kit out the cars.

The whole programme will have to be completed to a tight schedule in order for everything to be ready for the worldwide launch of the Range Rover Evoque, which is scheduled for the summer of 2011.

And the testing programme is being keenly watched by the staff at the Leeds Range Rover and Guiseley Range Rover dealerships. They are confident that the smallest and most fuel-efficient Range Rover ever produced will be delivered to them ready to handle the toughest Pennine road conditions – and that's just what the test programme is designed to discover.

An extensive choice of new Range Rover and Land Rover models is available, all produced in the UK. Leeds and Guiseley Land Rover and Range Rover dealers also offer a carefully chosen selection for anyone looking to buy a used Land Rover or used Range Rover.

Armoured Carrier, Wheeled, Indian Pattern, known also as Indian Pattern Carrier or other similar names, was an armoured car produced in India during World War II. Those produced by Tata Locomotives were called Tatanagars after the location of the works At the outbreak of World War II the United Kingdom was unable to meet the needs of the Commonwealth for armoured fighting vehicles. It led many Commonwealth countries to develop their own vehicles. As production of heavy armoured vehicles, such as tanks, required advanced industry which those countries lacked, most of the developed fighting vehicles were armoured cars, often based on imported chassis. The Rolls-Royce Armoured Car

The Rolls-Royce Armoured Car

The first Rolls-Royce armoured car was a privately owned vehicle fitted with a machine-gun and a limited amount of armour plate at a dockyard in France. It was used by a squadron of the Royal Naval Air Service in Flanders in 1914. Backed by First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill more and better versions followed until, by 1915 there were about 100 of them which were then handed over to the Army. "They searched the world for War" as Sir Albert Stern said of them and before long there were Rolls-Royce armoured cars operating as far apart as German South West Africa, the Western Desert, Gallipoli, all over the Middle East and the north west frontier of India. All of them used the classic 40/50hp Silver Ghost chassis. They were fast, silent and reliable but above all strong. "A Rolls in the desert is above rubies" said Lawrence of Arabia and the Duke of Westminster would have agreed with him following his famous raid to rescue the kidnapped crew of the steamship HMS Tara. At least one car accompanied the adventurous MP Oliver Locker-Lampson on his adventures in Russia. After the war, unable to find a better model the War Office simply copied the original Admiralty design with minor improvements. If that was not enough the Royal Air Force also acquired some to support their operations in the Middle East. A new design with a larger body and dome shaped turret also appeared for service in India. They also served in Ireland and even, briefly in Shanghai. The 11th Hussars still had Rolls-Royces in Egypt when the war against Italy began and the youngest of these was over fifteen years old when they went into action, but after that their numbers dwindled as newer vehicles came along. But then history repeated itself. Britain was threatened with invasion and a new army of veterans was raised to assist with defence. Some battalions built home made armoured cars, on private chassis and at least three of these were based on Rolls-Royces.

Armoured Warfare

Armoured Warfare

Armoured warfare or tank warfare is the use of armoured fighting vehicles in modern warfare. It is a major component of modern methods of war. The premise of armoured warfare rests on the ability of troops to penetrate conventional defensive lines through use of manoeuvre by armoured units. Much of the application of armoured warfare depends on the use of tanks and related vehicles used by other supporting arms such as infantry fighting vehicles and selfpropelled artillery, as well as mounted combat engineers and other support units. The doctrine of armoured warfare was developed to break the static nature of World War I trench warfare on the western front, and return to the 19th century school of thought that advocated manoeuvre and decisive battle outcomes in military strategy.
