Camel has unmistakably become the key color trend for the cold weather season. This deceptively unassuming shade has been aptly named by fashion editors industry-wide as the new black; and understandably so.
Michael Kors flirted with the endless possibility of match ability with coordinating camel chunky knits, headwear and accessories. Not far behind was designer Stella McCartney's autumn/winter 2010-11 collection that showcased clean cut camel skirts, sweaters, and of course the timeless golden hued overcoat.
And while it may feel as though I have mentally spray painted beige graffiti across your colorful wardrobe of life, take a moment to note the following. Camel is a chameleon color that can be combined with a variety of fashion styles.
Wearing the camel color trend can be as simple as updating your favorite silhouettes with this color, and this fall designers have not disappointed us with options. Camel cargos and capes with military accents lend to the utilitarian look, while fluid satin tops and belted wide-leg camel trousers create an air of sophistication. However if you find yourself in need of a little style inspiration, try the following tips.
Color. The golden tones of camel elevate this color transforming it from ordinary beige into a fantastic base for gorgeous color combinations. After all, the key is to work this trend into your existing wardrobe, not force you to buy a new one.
Looking for great camel color combinations? Take your pick -chocolate, reds, ivory, black, white, pink, blues, and greens.
For a flattering fall look, combine your favorite color with a striking camel hue that looks great against your skin tone. When in doubt, select a gorgeous color that radiates against your complexion and use the camel color as an accent.
Italian brand N°21 epitomized this look by strategically pairing a sleek camel blazer with a vivid purple blouse, while Rochas held our gaze by featuring an iridescent green dress with a sweet camel cardigan. The end result? Stunning.
The Look. As beautifully seen at Chloé, camel can be successfully worn head to toe. However to avoid a boring and bleak winter look break up your monochrome camel by combining at least two different texture or tones into the outfit. Alternatively, the contrasting color of a belt or scarf is a simple way to achieve the same effect.
Also expect to see camel toppers including classic trench styles, A-line coats, and of course the fall cape.
Accessories. As always, color trends are most easily picked up through accessories. If camel separates are not your style, work this trend in minimally with camel color handbags, shoes and accessories.
Because camel is more of a neutral shade, look for camel accessories with texture and finishes to add dimension to the outfit. Think camel clutch in a soft suede, distressed leather, or a classic camel pump with a smooth patent finish.
Accents. Camel looks fabulous with bronze or gold accents. These elements share the same golden base and will visually give depth to your camel toned look. When shopping this trend, keep in mind that colorful jeweled accessories will also pop against a camel base for a stellar look.
Expect to see this trend picked up by all major retailers, and sprinkled in with apparel separates and accessories at the local Denver boutiques. A fan of clean cut outerwear, it was only natural that I fell in love with the camel Burberry London trench coat available this season.
