With the loss of most census reports in for the years before 1922, the quantity of resource tools for Irish genealogy is rather limited. My favorite of the remaining sources are Griffith's Valuation of Ireland, The Hearth Money Rolls and the Tithe Applotment Books.
Griffith's Valuation of Ireland
Griffith's Valuation was undertaken between the years 1848 through 1864. It's a record of utmost importance due to the lack of census returns that have survived for those years. The survey was carried out to determine the amount of tax each person should pay towards the support of their poor law union. It was organized by poor law union - civil parish - barony - county.

Hearth Money Rolls
The Hearth Money Rolls 1663 - 1666. The Money Rolls exist only for several counties in what is now Northern Ireland, but are very useful because anyone who had a FIREPLACE was listed. The Hearth Money Rolls showed shows the barony, surname, forename and townland. The tax was two shilling per hearth or fireplace.
Tithe Applotment Books
The Tithe Applottment Books were performed due to an act passed in 1823 to establish the amount of tax that a landowner should pay to the Church of Ireland. (Whether you were a member of that church or not!) Valuation of each civil parish was undertaken from 1823 - 1838, when the act was abolished. The Tithe Applotment were terribly resented by the people of Ireland de to the inequities of the process. For example a potato patch was taxed at a higher rate than grazing land, so the poor farmer paid a higher tax than the landowner who grazed his horses or cattle on the land. The Books recorded essentially only the townland name, landholder's name, area of land, and tithes payable. In 1831 the people started refusing to pay these tithes and clergymen than started keeping a list of these Tithe Defaulters. The lists can provide a fuller picture of tithe-payers than the original Tithe Book, and can be useful to cross-check against the Book, especially if it dates from before 1831.
