Aran Islands Ireland
The Aran Islands. West coast of Ireland
The charming Aran Islands lie off the west coast of Ireland just outside Galway bay and only miles from the coast of Co. Clare.
The Aran islands is a group of 3 rocky islands. The landscape is an extension of the Burren in Co. Clare and as such is rocky and mostly barren. The 3 islands are:
Inisheer is the smallest of the 3 islands and is only 6 miles offshore from the Co. Clare village of Doolin . Easily accessible by ferry from Doolin (April-Oct) in about 30 minutes. Day trips are available from several ferry operators in Doolin and travel is also possible by ferry from Rossaveal in Co. Galway and by Air from Inverin in Connemara.
Inishmaan is the middle and least populated island and can be accessed by ferry from Doolin or Rossaveal
Inishmore is the largest island and there are numerous ferry services daily from Doolin in Co. Clare and Rossaveal in Co. Galway.
On the Islands transport is by horse and trap, Walking or Bicycle hire. On Inishmore there are organised bus tours.
These Islands are the last outpost of a bygone era. Steeped in culture and abundant with wildlife. All 3 of the islands have ancient forts, churches, tombs and Irish is still the spoken language. Mostly unspoilt and loved by visitors from all over the world the Aran islands are surely one of the worlds wonders.

Ireland, a Bicycle, and a Tin Whistle $32.45 As he travels through the North, Wilson gets beneath the political surface to portray both the tragedy and comedy of everyday life in the Protestant and Catholic communities. Aware of the polarized image that each side has of the other, he emphasizes the importance of finding common ground and of asserting the middle against the extremes. Just as traditional Irish music is characterized by ornamentations and elaborations on a melodic theme, Ireland, a Bicycle, and a Tin Whistle is full of variations and wanderings on the theme of the trip itself. And just as traditional Irish musicians will follow a sad slow air with a lively foottapping reel, Wilsons mood ranges from the nostalgic and reflective to the irreverent and mischievous. If there is a lament in one ear, there is a song in the other.
