Heat made a good example
I wish the men who run the Heat might be agreeable to conduct a seminar on how to properly own and operate a professional sports franchise. It would be exclusive, this seminar. The only people in the audience would be the folks in charge of the Dolphins, Marlins and Panthers -- all of whom would be listening with rapt attention and taking copious notes, we would hope.
This is an appreciation of Heat owner Micky Arison and club president Pat Riley, simply the state of the art at what they do. There isn't enough of that in sports. Appreciation. We don't do it enough as demanding fans, and we don't do it enough as critical journalists, where to buy Cheap NBA Jerseys? maybe ujersy is a good choice.
What Arison and Riley have done with this basketball team is a marvel. Another city owns the nickname but Miami has the formula: Magic. Locally, Arison and Riley are out front by miles and lapping the field. Nationally, there are few equal combinations of owner and architect anywhere, in any sport.
Top to bottom, the Heat is the most efficiently managed and smoothly run operation we have seen. It hardly is a coincidence or dumb luck that the team at the center of this operation is the best we have had in South Florida since the Dolphins' ever-receding halcyon days of 1972-73.
SEEING CLEARLY
What the Heat has going conjures envy or jealousy across the NBA. The reason is that Arison and Riley had good, wanted great, had a plan to make it happen -- and did.
We hear a lot about ``vision.'' We see the proof of the Heat's most every night. We see it in a 30-9 record, in a nearly surreal 21-1 run since that rocky start and in a current 12-game road winning streak homing in on the all-time record.
Mostly we see that vision as we watch LeBron James and Chris Bosh in the same uniform as Dwyane Wade and pinch ourselves -- still -- about how on earth this organization was able to make that happen.
These three playing together are not as good as anticipated. They're better.
You want vision? Turning the Heat into perpetual championship contenders for at least the next five seasons was years in the making. It took a blueprint and shrewd maneuvering to allow it in terms of the salary cap. It took Arison's wallet and faith. It took Riley's planning and force of personality. And, yes, it took the salesmanship of Wade, the brilliant franchise guard, the gift that keeps on giving.
Mostly it took an audacious, ravenous, we-want-it-all mind-set that didn't seem possible and that other teams didn't dare dream.
Arison and Riley have proved the perfect partnership because the owner is content to stay behind the scenes and let his perfectly appointed expert make the decisions that concern the bouncing ball. Riley is that combination of charisma and Hall of Fame résumé that makes him the perfect front man, representing image and content.
Hands-on, meddlesome owners can succeed. George Steinbrenner did. Jerry Jones and Mark Cuban do. But the background owner works just right for the Heat, because the man out front is the best there is.
NOWHERE BUT UP
This is an appreciation of the Heat partly because the NBA wing of our sports pantheon is in such stark contrast to our other three pro clubs.
We have just seen the Dolphins as a national laughingstock over the bungled coaching situation in which owner Stephen Ross wooed Bill Cowher and Jim Harbaugh behind the back of Tony Sparano, failed to hire either, then gave a raise and contract extension to the man he hoped to replace. Insanity.
Ross and unproven general manager Jeff Ireland are the Two Stooges compared to the leadership and accomplishment embodied by Arison and Riley, if you want to buy Indiana Pacers Jerseys, go to ujersy.
And how can suffering, angry Dolfans manage real hope when the leaders of the team are a coach the owner wanted to replace and a quarterback, Chad Henne, whom most fans would prefer to run out of town?
The previous owner brought in Bill Parcells, of the Rileyesque stature, but Tuna had limited success. During his term the Dolphins fell further behind the Patriots and Jets in the AFC East. Parcells had a chance for major, lasting impact in the 2008 NFL Draft, his first, and holding the first pick, but opted for tackle Jake Long. Franchise quarterback Matt Ryan went two spots later. Joe Flacco went later in the round.
Long, of course, has been good. But the Dolphins either failed to realize a franchise QB trumps a franchise tackle, or failed to identify Ryan or Flacco as worthy.
That decision still haunts the Dolphins. In a way, that decision is a big part of why Ross was jetting around humiliating his coach last week.
In three years of ownership Ross' most notable accomplishment with the Dolphins is parading a bunch of celebrity part owners on an orange carpet.
On, briefly, to the Marlins and Panthers.
Our baseball team is on decently solid ground with a new stadium opening a year from April, but the leadership personified by owner Jeffrey Loria and president David Samson is scorned by many or most fans, and with cause.
The Marlins have egregiously under-spent on player payrolls for years -- to such an unjustifiable degree the league's players association publicly called out the team and demanded an increase in spending. That was embarrassing.
So were later revelations about the club's healthy profit margin that left the impression local government and taxpayers were spending too much for the new ballpark in relation to Loria.
A DARK HOLE
The Panthers. Where to start? A decade out of the NHL playoffs has been a decade of tumult, a constant carousel of coaches and GMs, changing philosophies, new directions and restarts.
The new ownership consortium hired a qualified new GM in Dale Tallon, and the Panthers are improved, but the bottom line remains cruel: The Cats are last in their division and well off playoff pace. Again, Recommend directory: Grangee Indlana Pacers Jersey.
Only the Heat down here demonstrate what is possible when a solid, consistently generous owner who doesn't need to be out front or on stage partners with an exceptionally qualified architect of substance, aura and vision.
The people running the Dolphins, Marlins and Panthers are the rule more than the exception, perhaps more ordinary than incompetent, suffering mostly by comparison.
Because the people running the Heat are that good.
