Enniskillen - Co. Fermanagh: Center Of Northern Ireland's Lake District
Enniskillen - Co. Fermanagh, which is in Northern Ireland is the local center of government for Fermanagh District Council. It is also the largest town in the county.
The town is at the center of Northern Ireland's Lake District: in fact it is built on an island between Upper and Lower Lough Erne. Tourism is important to the local economy, and visitors rate the scenery in the area very highly. Some attractions which are close by to the town are the stately home Florencecourt House, and the limestone caverns known as Marble Arch Caves. Belleek which is situated at the other end of Lower Lough Erne is home to the Belleek Pottery. This produces fine quality parian chinaware which is exported to collectors across the world.
The Northern Ireland Lake District has a well deserved reputation for its natural beauty. Upper and Lower Lough Erne are ideal for many water activities. Water skiing and cruising are both popular here. Many small islands dot the two loughs (or lakes). One island is the site of one of the best preserved monastic remains in Ireland. The monastery on Devenish Island dates from the sixth century when it was founded by St Molaise. The round tower which can be seen there is from the twelfth century. Also there are the walls of the oratory of the founding saint.
Originally Enniskillen was a stronghold of the Maguire family, a clan of Gaelic lords. Hugh Maguire built a stone castle there in the fifteenth century, but there are some remains of what might be an older earthwork castle. The stone castle is the town's oldest building. During the Elizabethan Wars the English captured the castle, but the Maguires regained possession somehow, before losing it a final time in 1607 during the reign of James I. This was the time of the Plantation of Ulster and James' plan was to replace the Gaelic rulers with English and Scottish settlers. William Cole, a Londoner, came to Enniskillen as Constable at this time.
The importance of Enniskillen was greatly increased by William Cole. He rebuilt the castle, built two bridges, built himself a family house nearby, built the public buildings needed by an important Plantation town, and built many of the houses as well. Cole introduced settlers and their families from England and Scotland to do this work, and to live in the town. Mainly thanks to Cole the town had grown into an important center by 1688 when the Williamite Wars started.
During the war between the two kings (William III and James II) Enniskillen sided with William, and led resistance to James. Troops raised in the town gained an important victory at the Battle of Newtonbutler. Those Enniskillen troops eventually became two British Army regiments, the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and the Sixth (Inniskilling) Dragoons. The regimental museum is now in Enniskillen castle.
The name Inniskilling is an archaic spelling of Enniskillen. The town's name comes from the Irish Inis Ceithleann (The Island of Ceithleanm).

The Northern Ireland Troubles $15.95 No other modern British military campaign evokes as much emotion as the difficult and exceptionally lengthy operational deployment to Northern Ireland. Aaron Edward's new volume on the so-called 'Troubles' considers the strategic, operational and tactical level aspects of the British Army's longest ever campaign: the 38-year Military Aid to the Civil Power deployment in Northern Ireland, which was provided to support the local authorities restore law and order in the midst of sustained republican and loyalist violence. Codenamed 'Operation Banner' the Army's role went through a number of phases, moving from a peacekeeping stance in 1969-71, to a counter-insurgency position in 1971-77, finally ending in 2007, thirty years after the decision to scale back its activities in favour of giving the Royal Ulster Constabulary (and from 2000 the Police Service of Northern Ireland) primacy in counter-terrorist operations. An essential volume for anyone looking for insight into this historic conflict. From the Trade Paperback edition. |

Advancing with the Army $150 A detailed biographical study of the members of the army medical service during the Revolution and Napoleonic wars that charts their background and life both in and outside the army. It demonstrates how a group of medical practitioners from relatively humble backgrounds could use social contacts and experience forged in the army to become an established part of the educated British imperial elite. - ;Providing the first ever statistical study of a professional cohort in the era of the industrial revolution, this prosopographical study of some 450 surgeons who joined the army medical service during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, charts the background, education, military and civilian career, marriage, sons' occupations, wealth at death, and broader social and cultural interests of the members of the cohort. It reveals the role that could be played by the nascent. professions in this period in promoting rapid social mobility. The group of medical practitioners selected for this analysis did not come from affluent or professional families but profited from their years in the army to build up a solid and sometimes spectacular fortune, marry into the professions, and place their sons in professional careers. The study contributes to our understanding of Britishness in the period, since the majority of the cohort came from small-town and rural Scotland and Ireland but seldom found their wives in the native country and. frequently settled in London and other English cities, where they often became pillars of the community. - ;incorporates the rich variety of individual lives, and these vessels float easily on the ever flowing tide of date. - J. E. Cookson, Social History of Medicine;Rich in illustration, clear in analysis and solid in conclusion... a testament to team-work, seamless prose, and historical modesty. - Roger Cooter, English Historical Review |

The Story of the Irish Citizen Army $31.14 This is the first account of the formation of the Irish Citizen Army during the Dublin strike of 19131914, and the part it played in the subsequent history of Ireland. The author, who was himself a leading figure in the movement, writes with vigor and conviction on the role of labor in Ireland, and expresses a very definite opinion on the relations of the workers to the Nationalist movement. The book contains character portraits of Larkin, Connolly and the Countess Markiewicz; and facts bearing on the relations between the Citizen Army and the Volunteers emerge here for the first time. This dramatic account of the Irish Citizen Army also has its special importance in literary history as the first published work by Sean OCasey (under the pseudonym of P. O. Cathasaigh). Sean OCasey went on to become Irelands greatest playwright as well as the author of one of the most fascinating autobiographies in the history of literature. Official Irish Republican Army $68.51 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Official Irish Republican Army or Official IRA (informally the Officials or the Stickies ) is an Irish republican paramilitary group whose goal was to create a 32county workers republic in Ireland. It emerged from a split in the Irish Republican Army in December 1969, shortly after the beginning of The Troubles. The other group emerging from this split was the Provisional Irish Republican Army. Both groups continued to refer to themselves as the Irish Republican Army and rejected the political legitimacy of the other. It engaged in military action against the British Army until May 1972. Since then it has engaged in feuds with both the Provisional IRA and the Irish National Liberation Army, a radical splinter group formed in 1974. In later years, it was accused of involvement in organised crime. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Treaty Ports (Ireland) $71.7 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Following the establishment of the Irish Free State, three deep water Treaty Ports at Berehaven, Queenstown (modern Cobh) and Lough Swilly were retained by the United Kingdom as sovereign bases in accordance with the AngloIrish Treaty of 6 December 1921. Formerly, when the Free State was a part of Great Britain and Ireland, the Royal Navy had designated its Ireland Station as a longstanding separate command. The main reason for the retention of the ports was the recent Uboat Campaign around Irish coasts in 191418, and a concern by the British government that it might reoccur. As a part of the overall AngloIrish settlement it was envisaged that all other Royal Navy, British Army and RAF personnel and equipment were to evacuate the Free State. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 80 Publication Date: 2010/12/07 Language: English Dimensions: 6.00 x 9.02 x 0.19 inches |

Irish Republican Army (19221969) $114.71 The original Irish Republican Army (IRA) fought a guerrilla war against British rule in Ireland in the Irish War of Independence 19191921. Following the signing of the AngloIrish Treaty on 6 December 1921, the IRA in the 26 counties that were to become the Irish Free State split between supporters and opponents of the Treaty. The antiTreatyites, sometimes referred to by Pro Treaty forces as Irregulars, continued to use the name Irish Republican Army (IRA) or in Irish glaigh na hireann, as did the organisation in Northern Ireland which generally supported the proTreaty side. glaigh na hireann was also adopted as the name of the proTreaty National Army and remains the official legal title of the Irish Defence Forces. This article deals with the antiTreaty IRA that fought the Irish Civil War and was defeated by the Irish Free State forces and with its successors up to 1969, when the IRA split again. Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 170 Publication Date: 2009/11/03 Language: English Dimensions: 5.98 x 9.01 x 0.39 inches |
