Athenry Castle was founded by Meiler de Bermingham in circa 1250 and is located in what is now one of Ireland's best surviving medieval towns.
The hall-keep is the oldest part of the castle and it originally housed a hallway on the first floor and dark storage areas on the ground floor. The lower part of the wall slopes outward which gives the building extra strength and forms what is known as a 'batter'.
The original entrance to the castle would have been on the first floor with a wooden stairs for access, much as it is in its current form. This would have given direct access to the ceremonial reception room and the main hall of the castle. Heating would have been provided by a brazier located in the middle of the hall with smoke escaping from an opening in the ceiling above.
The exterior of the doorway and the inner side of the windows are carved with floral motifs in local style, a transition between Romanesque and Gothic, dating from the late 12th and early 13th centuries. This style can also be found at the abbeys of Boyle, Cong and Ballintubber.
The 13th century battlements are original work with tall arrow slits in the solid sections. The parapets were incorporated into steeply pitched gables at the north and south ends in the 15th century for a new roof at this level.
Guided tours for up to 40 people are available on request and a guide book can be obtained in both English and German. Tours typically take about 45 minutes. Photography and video is allowed but be sure to have a permit if it is for commercial purposes. There is also a 20-minute audio/visual presentation with seating for 60 people.
Unfortunately, there are no catering facilities in the castle, but there are plenty of cafes and restaurants located in the centre of Athenry town.
