Why is Welsh Gold so expensive?
Welsh gold is gold that was extracted from one of three mines in Wales; the Gwynfynydd and Clogau mines produced the most Welsh gold, while the Romans were known to have mined gold at Dolaucothi. These are the only areas in Wales where gold was ever found or mined, which contributes greatly to both the scarcity and high cost of Welsh gold. And because there is so little gold left, the mines have either shut down completely, or have been transformed into tourist destinations. This means that there is no current extraction of Welsh gold, and what is already on the market is all there is.
Welsh gold gains part of its popularity and costliness from the legends and history associated with it. It is a proven fact that civilizations as far back as the Romans mined and used Welsh gold in their jewelry and decorations. Celtic royalty also coveted Welsh gold above all other precious metals, using it to make both ceremonial and heraldic torques and brooches to denote their power and wealth. It is the storied gold of kings, and holds its popularity because of all it has symbolized.
Even the modern royal family holds stock in the power and prestige of Welsh gold. Six members of the modern royal family have been married using wedding rings of Welsh gold, made for them from the mines of Clogau. There are even pieces of the crown jewels and royal regalia which are made with the purest of Welsh gold.
Though it is impossible to distinguish Welsh gold from other types of gold, it remains the single most precious metal that can be attained today. Most pieces of Welsh gold jewelry actually contain only a portion of Welsh gold mixed with other gold, though the price is still at a premium. For those who want to be able to say they own the most precious metal in the world, Welsh gold is the right choice.
