Finding Your Art: Which Media Is Right For You
Can you imagine how different out world would be today if Michelangelo decided to become a musician? Or if Leonardo DaVinci gave up art to become an actor? Imagine architecture had Frank Lloyd Wright dedicated himself to sculpture. These are extreme examples that illustrate an important point all the same: we all have a particular artistic talent, and finding the right media (or form of the arts) that’s best suited for you is a crucial, vital step in accessing and developing your creativity. Artistic expression not only refuels us emotionally, it hones our minds and replenishes our vitality. It’s no exaggeration to say that following your artistic inspiration can literally add years to your life.
What you should create depends on what you like to absorb
If you’re a fan of painting, you likely have some talent for painting. If you’ve always admired sculpture, you may have some acumen for drawing life out of clay and stone. Our visual tastes and our creative impulse are linked in ways which we’re only beginning to understand. What we appreciate, what we’re drawn to, often reflects our own creative spirit longing to escape our minds and spirits and join the material world. Before undertaking a new artistic direction, give some long thought to the types of art and creation you’ve always appreciated the most. The media may be something in which you enjoyed participating as a child. Perhaps you were fascinated with something while in high school and college, but were unable to pursue because of other responsibilities. You may hear your creative impulse talking to you from deep within yourself, a kind of low-power signal broadcasting to your mind. Listening to that signal – receiving it – will tell what you need to know.
Taking the first steps on your artistic endeavor.
Your new artistic undertaking should be more than a new hobby or past time. In reaching to channel your creative spirit, you begin not just a new way of entertaining or enriching yourself. You create an endeavor, a word that traditionally means “noble and courageous attempt.” A wise man once said that art is the only thing people add to the beauty that’s already in the world. When you create art, you bring more beauty into the world than was there before. And who doesn’t want that?
Research the different kinds of art to see which one is best for you.
If you’re still not sure about which media to pursue, don’t worry! In determining your chosen media you get to experience some of the art already available. This can mean trips to your local museum, browsing online materials, and perusing hobby and craft stores to see what kinds of lessons and local clubs will support and aide your efforts. Those hobby and craft stores make excellent places to search and discover local resources. While there you can also shop for supplies and get a sense of what’s available and affordable before you begin working, taking stock of the prices and supplies so that your new form of expression won’t leave you crying over your budget.

Christ in Celtic Christianity (Paperback) $86.54 Christ in Celtic Christianity gives a new interpretation of the nature of Christianity in Celtic Britain and Ireland from the fifth to the tenth century. The written and visual evidence on which the authors base their argument includes images of Christ created in and for this milieu, taken from manuscripts, metalwork and sculpture and reproduced in this study. The authors challenge the received opinion that Celtic Christians were in unity with Rome in all matters except the method of Easter reckoning and the shape of the clerical tonsure. They find, on the contrary, that the strain of the Pelagian heresy which rooted itself in Britain in the early fifth century influenced the theology and practice of the Celtic monastic Churches on both sides of the Irish Sea for several hundred years, creating a theological spectrum quite distinct from that of continental establishments. MICHAEL W. HERREN is Professor of Classics and Distinguished Research Professor at York University (Toronto), a member of the Graduate Faculty at the Centre for Medieval Studies in the University of Toronto, and an Honorary Member of the Royal Irish Academy; SHIRLEY ANN BROWN is Professor of Art History and a member of the Faculty of Graduate Studies at York University. |
