Graphic Design's Roots: Oscar Wilde, Influential In The Field

Design, pattern and shape were all essential design elements used by graphic illustrators towards the end of the 1800s. The man who used those same elements and actually changed the way that graphic designers looked at a page, died at the age of only 26 years. Artists continue to attempt to copy his highly individualistic interpretation of art nouveau.

Oscar Wilde advocated and patronized an assortment of artistic movements, methods and styles. He deeply regarded the practice of art as an end unto itself. He felt that assessing art by ethical or standards was a misguided notion. He quickly became a polemical and substantial literary presence and remained so during his brief life. Oscar Wilde opted to create drawings to illustrate a tale, which was exotic, kinky, and wicked, especially for the time period. The tale was illustrated in fantastical patterns, sweeping lines, and eroticism somewhat threaterning in its design.

There is an incredibly dramatic interplay between white and black that characterizes his work. Wilde applied large borders of black to provide variance with dainty patterns frolicking on a surface of white. Large, sweeping, winding curves generate movement across Wilde's pages. His pieces tend to be asymmetrical. While the characters in most of his drawings are just simple outlines the objects they are holding, like their clothing or hair, are most often complex. The power of his work is perfected by the inter-relationship between the complex and the simple.

Many artists in the 1800s were influenced by items which were being imported from Asia, in addition to a focus on Renaissance decor and medieval artworks. The young illustrator's work was published in several famous periodicals, and became the source from which other artists copied him, both in Europe and the United States. Nowadays, a great deal of his work is reproduced to be employed as framed posters and prints hung on walls.

Poster art evolved during the 19th century; it was first simply used as commercial advertising, and then changed into a completely different art form. Posters shined in color, unlike books, which were printed in black and white. The leader in poster design used one sizable, bright, colorful, image to draw in the viewer. Informative text regarding the item or event in question were as short as they could be. He knew that the audience's attention was more easily attracted to simplicity so he used vivid colors and flat, basic shapes. These lines could be called hesitant, and were sometimes fractured, a bit like an impressionist would create. Tbis artist's work is therefore widely known as the precursor to the true art nouveau poster aesthetic.

A different illustrator who employed more powerful outlines and contours with greater fluidity is believed to have created the proper art nouveau poster. His work is always characterized by willowy young girls in rather loose clothing, and with their hair that's long, flowing, and billows out in capricious forms. Another of the well known and affluent art nouveau poster designer's works were always one elegant, narrow strip, usually depicting a full length female figure. Patterns within these works are often inspired by fold art, Celtic works, Japanese woodcuts, mosaics from the Byzantine Era, Moorish & Arab decor, and the Hebrew alphabet.

Talented turn of the century graphic designers produced many drawings which can now be seen in reprints and books, if you look for them. Late 19th century and early 20th century poster art is available from dealers who specialize in it. If you travel to international antique shows, you can find their booths among the aisles. An original work in good condition will generally set you back hundreds or thousands of dollars.
