Headpieces for Celtic Weddings
Themed weddings have become more and more popular and important. Some couples choose a specific theme for a wedding to reflect their heritage or culture. There are other couples who choose a themed wedding simply because it is fun. It allows them to be creative or express themselves, planning for a more unique and memorable wedding event. A themed wedding also gives the wedding more structure, a guide on what guidelines they should follow in order to achieve that look.
Celtic weddings are some of the popular themed weddings to date. The theme can be recreated even if neither of the couple is Irish or lived in Ireland before. Some elements of the traditional Catholic wedding are said to be taken from the Celtic wedding. There are many fascinating customs and traditions which make Celtic weddings more authentic. One interesting custom requires the couple to drink honey from a goblet for at least a month. This was done in the hopes of protecting the bride from being taken away by the fairies as well as to promote virility. From this tradition is where the term honeymoon is said to have been derived.
In traditional Catholic weddings, the accessory placed on the head is most commonly referred to as the bridal tiara. It is a head accessory which holds the veil in piece and part of the ensemble which makes the bride look and feel more like a princess. In authentic Celtic weddings, there are several types of headpieces, each with its own set of meanings. The bridal tiara is just one of those types.
During more ancient times, members of royalty more commonly wore crowns to distinguish themselves from other members of society. These were not just worn during weddings but in every occasion where the king and queen were seen in public. Crowns essentially look like tiaras but are more elaborately designed and accessorized. These are recognizable for having arched pieces which connect at the top with an ornament. On the inside, fabric is attached for added comfort when wearing the headpiece. Although more commonly associated with formal members of royalty, these can still be found in Celtic weddings.
A coronet is a smaller crown but without the arches. This design aspect sets it apart from the crown. One typical example used to illustrate this type of headpiece is seen on old coins with a "Liberty Head" design. Like the crown, this type of headpiece is also placed on top of the head.
Another type of crown is the circlet. Similar to the coronet, the circlet does not have the connected arched pieces or a cap of fabric connected on the inside. The circlet resembles a bridal tiara except that the former is placed on the forehead rather than on top of the head. More modern films such as the Lord of the Rings trilogy have brought the circlets back into the public's imagination and interest, evoking images of elves and fairies.
The most common headpiece used during weddings is the tiara. Bridal tiaras look strikingly similar to circlets, with the exception that they are placed on top of the head, slightly slanted rather than flat. These are the most popular types of headpieces commonly found in most contemporary weddings.
