Ancient Anglo-Saxon jewellery or Viking jewellery designs are as mysterious in nature as they are intricate in design. Anglo –Saxon and Vikings jewellery and metalwork incorporated the ancient tradition of Celtic design. This not only involves use of the classic, twisting shapes we see everywhere from jewellery to tee-shirts, from mugs to even tattoos –but also animal imagery, inscriptions and coiled, twisted metal work.
The discovery of the Staffordshire hoard in 2009 by Terry Herbert has inspired jewellery makers to produce a line of jewellery inspired by the Anglo-Saxon treasures found by Herbert on his friend's farmland. In total, 2.5 kilos of silver and 5 kilos of gold were discovered, mainly comprising of martial items such as the fittings from sword belts, thought to have been torn from the items they decorated prior to their burial.
The origin of the Staffordshire hoard is unclear, and will probably be up for debate by many historians over the coming years. The treasure may have been buried as a gift to the gods, or hidden from Vikings during their infamous raids on the British Isles. Whatever the case may be, the war-like nature of the items symbolises a bloody and violent past, but a past where progress was made in terms of design and form, and beautiful and unique designs in metalwork emerged.
The jewellery based on the designs found on the objects found in the Staffordshire hoard is made from bronze, with red crystal and cold enamel used to replicate the garnet inlay which was found on many of the gold and silver items discovered by Terry Herbert in the treasure.
The designs found on Vikings jewellery are also waiting to be discovered, with beautiful spiral designs in pewter, steel and bronze. These designs are not only representative of the original designs worn by Viking women and men, but also of the life which they lived. Pendants incorporating imagery such as axes or longboats are striking reminders of this fascinating period in history.
