Is There a Reason Why Your Little Girl Wants to Dress Up in a Child's Fairy Costume?

Children tend to love Halloween. And it is no surprise that a large majority of them want to be dressed in a child's fairy costume. Where does the need to dress like a fairy come from? Why does your child always want to dress like a fairy?

The history of fairies can be traced all the way back to Celtic times. Although there are reports of fairies prior to this period, we will concentrate only on the Celtic era. During those times there were only good and bad fairies. Children that live during these times were frightened of fairies and had worried about being haunted by them. To be like one or dress up like one was completely out of the question. Parents feared the dark fairies and would have frowned upon their children wanting to dress like them whether it be good or bad fairy. Dressing like a fairy may attract them. To draw any kind of fairy to a person was not something people were comfortable with in those times.

It was not until the 1800's where the focused change from fear into a curiosity. The 1900's brought fairies into the mainstream with movies, books, clothing and more. Later a man by the name of "Walt Disney" took children on an adventure they would never forget. The animated adventure was called "Peter Pan".

"Peter Pan" was more than an animated movie, it was an exploration in the inner drive and strength that all women posses. It was a Tinker Fairy from Pixie Hollow, who went by the name of "Tinkerbell" who captivated the hearts of the both the animated characters and audiences around the world.

This marked a complete reversal from the way people would think about fairies. They were now courageous, soft, beautiful, fun and a friendly to children. Walt quickly capitalized on this with selling "Tinkerbell" clothing, lunchbox, pens, stationary and more. Kid's clothing was a big hit. Halloween costumes followed. Walt had a way of making the most frightening mystical beings loveable and friendly. When your little girl wants to dress up like a fairy this Halloween, you will now understand why.

Joseph Jacobs (18541916) was a literary and Jewish historian. He was a writer for the Jewish Encyclopaedia and a notable folklorist, creating several noteworthy collections of fairy tales. He was secretary of the Society of Hebrew Literature from 1878 to 1884, and in 1882 came into prominence as the writer of a series of articles in The Times on the persecution of the Jews in Russia. This led to the formation of the mansion house fund and committee, of which Jacobs was secretary from 1882 to 1900. In 1890 he edited English Fairy Tales, the first of his long series of books of fairy tales published. Others include Indian Fairy Tales (1892), Celtic Fairy Tales (1892), More English Fairy Tales (1894) and More Celtic Fairy Tales (1895). He was also the author of Book of Wonder Voyages (1896) and The Story of Geographical Discovery (1898). In this volume Joseph Jacobs has proceeded on much the same lines as those which he laid down in compiling Celtic Fairy Tales. In making his selection he attempted to select the tales common both to Erin and Alba. He included, as specimen of the Irish medi eval hero tales, one of the three sorrowful tales of Erin: The Tale of the Children of Lir. For the drolls, or comic relief, of the volume, he drew upon the inexhaustible Kennedy and the great J. F. Campbell, who still stands out as the most prominent figure in the history of the Celtic Fairy Tale. Jacobs attempted to do what the brothers Grimm did for Germany, so far as that was possible. In Jacobs own words The Celtic materials are so rich that it would tax the resources of a whole clan of Grimms to exhaust the field. In this volume you will find 20 Celtic tales of Jack the Cunning Thief, Paddy oKelly and the Weasel, the Dream of Owen OMulready, The Farmer of Liddesdale, The Greek Princess and the Young Gardener, Elidore, the Ridere of Riddles and more. In Jacobs own words, The Celts went forth to battle, but they always fell. Yet the captive Celt has enslaved his captor in the realm of imagination. In an attempt to give a library of the Celts wealthy imagination to his readers, Jacobs has attempted to begin the readers captivity with the earliest recordings of these tales. And captivate he doesMore Celtic Fairy Tales not only preserves a cultural history, but is also richly entertaining. We invite you to curl up with this unique sliver of Celtic folklore not seen in print for over a century; immerse yourself in the tales and fables not heard in homes for many a year. A percentage of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to the Princes Trust for their work with youth across the United Kingdom. Author: Jacobs, Joseph/ Batten, John D. Andrew Lang's Fairy Books

Andrew Lang's Fairy Books or Andrew Lang's "Coloured" Fairy Books constitute a twelve-book series of fairy tale collections. Although Andrew Lang did not collect the stories himself from the oral tradition, the extent of his sources, who had collected them originally (with the notable exception of Madame d'Aulnoy), made them an immensely influential collection, especially as he used foreign-language sources, giving many of these tales their first appearance in English. As acknowledged in the prefaces, although Lang himself made most of the selections, his wife and other translators did a large portion of the translating and telling of the actual stories.— Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
