The humble silver ring has been used as a symbol representative of eternity for centuries in many traditions. Silver was first mined as far back as 4000 B.C. and rings were worn as decoration and as symbols of prosperity for centuries. Early peoples attached a special significance to the unbroken circle represented by the silver ring.

Early Pagan priestesses were often depicted wearing rings, either singly or in multiple array upon their fingers. Circles are representative of protective magic and echo the cyclic nature of life and thus held an important place in the lives of early Pagans. Silver itself is a metal associated with the moon, due to its colour and light reflecting qualities which can be compared to the reflection of moonlight upon still waters.

Silver was worn predominantly by women due to its connections to the moon which was said to reflect the cyclic nature of a women's menses and also the feminine qualities inherent in women. As centuries past jewellers took to carving symbols and intricate patterns into the silver rings worn by their clients.

Celtic knot work designs and stylised Goddess images were incorporated into the design. Pentagrams became a popular symbol as did crosses and letters of the alphabet. Often a lover would give a silver ring with their initials carved into the silver as a token or declaration of love. This tradition has carried over into the present day.

Silver rings can vary in design from narrow bands clustered with gemstones to broad flat bands with little or no adornment and this preference is the decision of the wearer. The quality of silver varied greatly until an international standard was imposed and now most silver is marked with the 925 to symbolize that it is 92.5% silver, with other content being nickel, copper or zinc. The addition of gems made an appearance along with the decorative accents of intricate carvings to adorn silver rings.

These carvings and gems were thought to imbue the ring with magical powers and they became powerful talismans for warding off negative forces. Rings were hung over babies cribs to protect them from harm or worn around the neck of the wearer on a silver chain. Some rings were specifically imbued with certain qualities, such as courage, concentration, or to aid the wearer in achieving a certain goal.

Such items passed from mother to daughter for many generations, the myth of power perpetuated as the age of the ring and its lore increased. Though this tradition has mostly fallen away most can point to a family heirloom in the form of a silver ring that has been passed to them from a great grandmother and has some special significance or memory attached to it.

In modern times we are offered a wide selection of products, but the humble silver ring has remained a popular item, though its form has altered dramatically over the centuries from the unadorned simple band that was first seen upon the hands of the village wise woman.
